Adult Recommendations
For Recommenders: Link to Recommendation Form
For ASE Applicants: Link to Recommendation Request Handout
ASE applicants must submit two (2) adult recommendations as part of their final application. The person can be a teacher, counselor, coach or some other non-relative that knows your intellectual interest, academic ability and character. We strongly suggest that at least one of your recommendations be from a science, math or computer teacher.
Directions for Teachers & other Adult Recommenders:
How the Process Works:
1) Please submit your ASE recommendation information at the link above. The online form includes a section for rating the student’s academic background and personal characteristics, and a section for providing a formal letter of recommendation. You can review the form in advance, if desired. Background information on the ASE Program is provided at the end of this sheet for your use.
2) You should receive a confirmation email immediately after you submit the recommendation form. The confirmation email will include a full copy of the information that you submit. Please contact us immediately if you do not receive a confirmation email, if you discover errors in the submitted information, or if you receive a confirmation email unexpectedly (ie, you did not submit a recommendation). ASE staff members can be reached at 503-200-5861 or ase@saturdayacademy.org
Please note: Some schools have online security settings that prevent teachers from successfully submitting information via online forms. In those situations, you will not receive an error message or a confirmation email from ASE. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact ASE immediately.
3) Once you submit your recommendation, the student will automatically receive a confirmation email as well. The student will NOT receive a copy of your letter and other information that you submit; the email only verifies that you submitted the online form.
4) Once received by ASE, your recommendation will be formatted by Saturday Academy staff members and then included as part of the student’s application materials. The information that you provide is not used to screen ASE applicants. Instead, recommendations will be reviewed by mentors and their colleagues during the intern selection period (late March – mid April). Students typically select 3 internship positions as their top choices – the information that you submit, as well as the rest of their application materials, will be delivered to all 3 potential mentors.
5) We want you to be honest in your recommendations, however if you can’t in good conscience provide a somewhat positive recommendation, please politely decline the student’s request.
6) We do not accept recommendations provided by family members of the applicant.
Important Information on Formatting Your Recommendation Letter:
1) The recommendation letter should be 500 words or less.
2) What to leave OUT: All of the following items will automatically be delivered to the mentors, so there is no need to include them in the body of your letter: o Recommendation letter date o Your contact information o A salutation (i.e. Dear Mentors, etc.) Please note that ASE mentors are male and female and that gender-specific references, such as “Sir,” might be inappropriate. o The student’s contact information or ASE ID number 3) What to INCLUDE: o Please place a ^ where you would like a paragraph to appear in the body your letter. If you omit the ^, your letter will not have paragraphs. To type a ^, first hold down the Shift key and then press the 6 at the top of your keyboard. o Please feel free to include a complimentary close (such as “Respectfully yours,” or “Sincerely,”) along with your name and title, if desired. Please use single spacing for this. Tip #1: We recommend composing your letter, following the formatting guidelines above, using Word or a similar program before filling out the online form. You can then simply copy and paste the letter into the appropriate section of the form during your online session.
Tip #2: We recommend that you allow yourself sufficient time to write a thoughtful letter. ASE is a competitive program: we typically receive applications from three to five times as many students as we have internships. The student should have requested your letter at least two weeks in advance of the March 5th deadline to allow you this time.
Tip #3: Be realistic about how many letters you can write. For instance, feel free to turn down your 8th request!
Directions for ASE Applicants: We will only accept recommendations submitted via online form by adult recommenders. They must have your full name, ASE ID# and your email address to complete your online recommendation. Your email address will be used to send you a confirmation email, letting you know the recommendation has been successfully completed.
Please give the person recommending you the handout above with all of the pertinent information.
If adult recommenders or interns have further questions, call (503-200-5861) or email us(ase[at]saturdayacademy.org), and we'd be happy to help you.
