Saturday Academy has a many wonderful instructors. Our instructors are professionals who bring expertise in the subjects they have chosen to teach and excitement for helping students discover new concepts & ideas.

Bobby Abrahamson

Bobby Abrahamson is a photography, filmmaker, documentary artist and media educator with more than 17 years professional experience teaching and producing artwork. He teaches black and white photography at Northwest Academy, photography workshops at Portland Art Museum and courses at Pacific Northwest College of Art. In February 2005, Bobby published his first book of photographs entitled One Summer Across America.

Justin Allen

Justin Allen is an adjunct writing instructor at Portland State University and Mount Hood Community College.

Kent Anderson

Kent Anderson, an Application Developer at ESCO Corporation, is a software developer who writes computer applications to control manufacturing processes. He programs in C, SQL, PL/SQL, PERL, KSH and BASH.

Pat Arnold

Pat Arnold has over 20 years of experience as a theatrical makeup artist. She has worked as a makeup artist for the Portland Opera, and for community theater and television productions.

Gary Aulicino

Gary Aulicino, with a Masters in Industrial Arts Education, has 32 years experience teaching industrial arts, math, science and computer education.

Delia Bacso

Delia Bacso, a Professional Apparel Industry Designer for nineteen years, worked as a Senior Designer/ Merchandiser for Jantzen Inc. in their Swimwear and Sportswear Line and as an Art Director and Textile designer for Koret of California. She is currently a freelance designer and a fashion design instructor for Sabin Schellenberg Center.

Deborah Barnes

Deborah Barnes, with fourteen years experience in radio and television broadcasting, is the Media Communications instructor at Sabin-Schellenberg Center.

Rachel Barnett

Rachel Barnett is the Associate Director of the Reed College Reactor Facility.

Beth Barteletti

Beth Barteletti has a master's and specialist's degree in education from the University of Florida. She was a high school counselor for two years and has been working in admission at Reed College for almost seven years.

Rudy Barton

Rudy Barton is Chair of the Department of Architecture at Portland State University.

Victoria Blake

Victoria Blake is a published short story writer, journalist and poet. She has had stories on NPR, Oregon Business Magazine, Portland Monthly Magazine and the Willamette/Week.

Dave Blizzard

Dave Blizzard is a Computer Science Instructor at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand for 6 months of the year and is an industry programmer throughout the year.  He currently teaches Java, C#, and object oriented database management.  His teaching is based on 35 years of experience in industry. His diverse experience includes everything from creating real-time imbedded control systems for paper mills to managing the design and implementation of large online database applications for major banks.

Kara Breuer

Kara Breuer has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She has worked as an environmental chemist for the Army Corps of Engineers and now teaches organic chemistry courses at the University of Portland.

Charissa Brock

Charissa Brock, with an MFA, is a nationally known artist who has taught art in the USA as well as abroad. Charissa was an artist in residence at the Oregon College of Art & Craft and has worked at Bulleye Glass Company as a glass instructor.

Michelle Cambell-Breckon

Michelle Cambell-Breckon is a biologist  who has taught students of all ages. She has worked with the Black Bear Rehabilitation Program in Arizona and the Bureau of Land Management in Wyoming.

Deborah Canepa

Dr. Deborah Canepa, who has a PhD in Anatomy from OHSU, is an Associate Professor of Biology for Linfield College Portland Campus.

Jason Carlisle

Jason Carlisle, BSN, RN, is an Emergency and Pediatrics Nurse at OHSU.

Jerritt Collard

Jerritt Collard is Executive Director of LinuxFund.org, which sponsors research and development of Free and Open Source Software. He has a BA in Physics and is a business consultant, specializing in integrative IT.

Rick Collett

Rick Collett is a staff member with the Birds of Prey program. He routinely assists with the training of volunteers and instructs both youth and adults in a variety of training classes.

Lisa Colombo

Lisa Colombo has a BA in education with high distinction from University of Michigan. Lisa develops and teaches hands-on, inquiry-based, science classes and assemblies for students pre-K–12.

Alice Cotton

Alice Cotton, author of the book When Buildings Speak, is an architectural artist and educator.

Katrina Cummins

Katrina Cummins has a Masters degree in Educational Psychology and a background in teaching, training, and consulting. She facilitated Learn Right, a study skills learning program in Australia.

Beau Dickey

Beau Dickey, a new media developer for MBF media, is a Macromedia Flash Certified Professional with work in e-commerce, game design, geographical information systems and client/server-side programming.

Nancy Donehower

Nancy Donehower has a PhD in Psychology. An independent college counselor, she has worked in college admissions at Sarah Lawrence College, Duke University and Reed College.

Mark Doyle

Mark Doyle, an Assistant Professor at George Fox University, teaches Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology. He has a PhD from OHSU’s Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and is studying the brainstem as a post doctoral fellow at OHSU.

Tom Duggan

Tom Duggan is a high school science instructor and has taught the Amphibians & Reptiles classes at Oregon Zoo for more than ten years.

Cindy Dulcich

Cindy Dulcich holds a Masters in Teaching degree from Lewis and Clark College and has taught elementary school for fourteen years.

Richard Duncan

Richard Duncan has taught oceanography and marine biology for middle school, high school, the OSU Marine Science Center and other universities.

Sharon Dunham

Sharon Dunham is education coordinator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

Roger Eiss

Roger Eiss, a former Chemistry professor, has worked as a computer consultant, and at Mentor Graphics, Oregon Department of Economic Development and Oregon Graduate Institute.

Erin Ergenbright

Erin Ergenbright has an MFAin English/Fiction from the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop. She is a published author and writing instuctor.

Loic Fabricant

Loic Fabricant, a second year medical student, graduated from University of Oregon with a degree in biology.

John Fogarty

John Fogarty has his PhD in Applied Physics from Oregon Graduate Institute of Science & Technology.  He has worked in the display industry for over 10 years, and is currently the Principal Optical Engineer at Clarity Visual Systems.

Carla Forte

Carla Forte has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Certificate from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Her art has been featured in many exhibitions in Philadelphia and three local exhibitions.

Vivian Foster

Vivian Foster, owner of What About the Kids?, is an educational consultant. She has written and taught math courses for TAG students.

Greg Fowler

Greg Fowler, Ph.D. is the Executive Director and Founder of Geneforum, a Portland-based non-profit organization committed to exploring the ethical and social issues of new genetic technologies. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Public Health at OHSU and an Adjunct Professor of Biology at PSU.

Stephen Frantz

Stephen Frantz, Director of the Reed College Reactor Facility, is a licensed professional engineer who has worked in the field of nuclear energy for over twenty years.

Meg Frey

Dr. Meg Frey is a veterinarian with Groves Lake Oswego Veterinary Clinic and Forest Heights Veterinary Clinic.

Alice Froehlich

Alice Froehlich is a staff member of Audubon Society of Portland's Education Department.

Tristan Gleason

Tristan Gleason has a BA from Bowdoin College and teaches at Lincoln High School.

Caren Graham

Equity actor Caren Graham is an acting, dialect and voice instructor and a prior recipient of the Drammy Award. Caren has a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Washington, is a professional voice talent, and an acting instructor at Mt Hood Community College.

Carl Haessler

Carl Haessler is a US Chess Federation Life Master, a three-time Oregon Champion and a chess instructor.

Brian Christopher Hamilton

Brian Christopher is a professional musician and songwriter based in Portland. His songwriting credits include contributions to a variety of albums and artists as well as television series.

Richard Harris

Rich Harris has been a professional graphic designer and illustrator for twenty years. He is a columnist for Photoshop Fix magazine, and teaches classes in computer graphics at Mt. Hood Community College.

Bradley Heintz

Bradley Heintz holds an advanced math teaching license in Oregon and California as well as two master degrees. He is a fulltime high school teacher whose experience includes college mathematics instruction and running a private tutoring business in California.

Jennifer Hooper McCarty

Jennifer Hooper McCarty received her BS in Chemistry and Masters and PhD in Materials Science from Johns Hopkins University, where she completed her dissertation work on the scientific analysis of the rivets from the RMS Titanic. She has specialized in studying historic artifacts and structures at the Smithsonian, as well as at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Currently, she is publishing a book on her forensics studies on the famous ship.

Les Hopkins

Les Hopkins has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer and an art director for more than thirty years. He has won many awards locally and nationally for his work.

Jean Horn-Weaver

Jean Horn Weaver is a freelance writer and journalist. She has a Master of Arts degree in Teaching.

Tara Hridle

Tara Hridle, with a MAT and a BS in Biology, teaches high school science. She has written a two year integrated high school science curriculum and developed curriculum and educational activities for the Houston Zoo.

Barbara Hughes

Barbara Hughes is the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Room Department at OHSU.

Daniel Huld

Dan Huld, BS, is a science instructor for Sabin Skills Center and the New Urban High School.

Paula Hunger

Paula Hunger, a teacher at Oregon Episcopal School, is a former TAG instructor.

Zach Hyde

Zachary Hyde got his undergraduate degree in geology with a focus on paleontology at SUNY Buffalo. He taught general earth science in a high school summer enrichment program in Buffalo Public Schools. He is now pursuing a master's degree in molecular biology at PSU, where he teaches microbiology labs.

Claudia Ingham

Claudia Ingham, a member of Geneforum’s Advisory Committee and the Biotechnology Industry Organization, teaches 9 - 12 grade science at the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy in Beaverton.

Scott Isler

Scott Isler has been involved in science education for more than 20 years focusing on physics and robots.

Shane Iverson

Shane Iverson studied extensively under the guidance of Tom Brown and from the teachings passed down by Apache elder, Stalking Wolf. He designed tracking protocols for the Mt. Hood National Forest, which are used to survey and research the area’s wildlife.

D. Kipp Johnson

Kipp Johnson, a graduate of Princeton University, is the Chair of the Mathematics Department at Valley Catholic High School.

Wendy Johnson

Wendy J. Johnson, a graduate of Western Culinary Institute, teaches for the culinary program at David Douglas High School. She formerly worked for Pazzo Ristorante in Portland as the Executive Pastry Chef and Banquet Chef.

Angela Jones

Angela Jones is a second-year medical student at OHSU.

Kim Karper

Kim Karper is a former middle school science teacher. She has worked on the U.S. fish and Wildlife’s salmon restoration programs in SW Washington.

Trevis Karper

Trevis Karper has a BS in Marine Biology. He has taught pond building and aquaculture through the Peace Corps in Zambia and is currently teaching middle school science.

Tami Katz

Tami Beth Katz teaches interior design at the Sabin-Schellenberg Center. She practiced architecture for over 20 years, taught an interior design program at Bassist College and has a Masters in Teaching.

Sherrie Kendall

Sherrie Kendall has a B.A.in elementary education from Whitworth College and M. Ed from the University of Missouri. After teaching elementary school in Seattle, she recently moved to Portland where she teaches pre-K - 2nd grade science classes and elementary enrichment classes.

Jane Kenney-Norberg

Jane Kenney-Norberg, a former research biologist, teaches science at Oregon Episcopal School.

Paul Kennison

Paul Kennison, A.B. in philosophy from Princeton University, teaches a diverse range of subjects to all ages.

Barbara Kerr

Barbara Kerr is a high school math teacher with a master’s degree in education and a math tutor for 5th – 12th grade students.

Jack Kiley

Jack Kiley has a BS in verterbrate zoology from Cornell University. He has worked in the environmental and energy fields and is currently a zookeeper at the Oregon Zoo, specializing in giraffe's, hippos and rhinos.

Lynn Kitagawa

Lynn Kitagawa, a professional medical illustrator, has a BFA from Pacific NW College of Art, and a MFA in Medical and Biological Illustration from the University of Michigan.

Noah Kleiman

Noah Kleiman is an experimental composer, computer programmer and Exectuive Director of The Old Library Studio, Portland's non-profit music-technology education center for teens. He holds a BA in Computer Music from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Amy Konsterlie

Amy Konsterlie is an artist specializing in illustrating architecture and wildlife. She has exhibited and sold her work for 20 years and teaches art to students of all ages.

Lee Krist

Lee Krist has a background in photochemistry and conceptual aesthetics and is an experimental filmmaker specializing in hand-processed film production techniques. His films have been screened at the Whitney Museum and San Francisco Cinemateque.

Lisa Lamert

Lisa Lammert is a middle school science teacher specializing in life and earth science and chemistry.

Larry Larsen

Larry Larsen has an MFA in Scenic and Lighting Design from the University of Washington. He is an Associate Professor and Director of Theatre at the University of Portland. His current design work includes “Death of a Salesman” at ART.

Tom Lindsay

Tom Lindsay, with over 20 years experience at the high school and university level, is a geology instructor at Portland State University. He is pursuing his PhD in geology with an emphasis in geoscience education and paleontology.

Lianne Linn

Lianne Lin is a first year medical student at OHSU. She has a BS in biochemistry from University of Washington.

Jim Longstreth

Jim Longstreth is an educator, an industrial artist and a professional model builder.

Rebecca Lowe Warren

Rebecca Lowe-Warren, co-author of The Scientist Within You series, teaches at Marylhurst University.

Kendra Lwebuga

Kendra Lwebuga is the founder of Spinnaker Architect. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon’s architecture program, and recipient of the 2001 Ion Lewis Award. Her practice focuses on residential and community architecture.

Gayle MacDonald

Gayle MacDonald graduated magna cum laude from Brown University, with a double major in Mathematics and Theatre Arts. She currently works as a freelance teacher and math tutor in the Portland area.

Douglas MacDougal

Douglas MacDougal, with a BS in mathematics and a law degree, is a life-long amateur astronomer and a member of Rose City Astronomers. He solves mathematical problems related to astronomy, and owns several telescopes, the largest of which is an 18" reflecting telescope.

Jennifer Marcus

Jennifer Marcus, with a BA in Fine Arts from Mills College, has taught woodworking workshops for students and teachers throughout the Los Angeles area. Locally, she has taught students for private and public schools, including the summer program at Catlin Gabel.

Karen Margolis

Karen Margolis, a freelance writer and teacher, teaches creative writing with both Literary Arts’ Writers in the Schools and Community of Writers.

William Martin

William H. Martin, Ph.D., is Professor, Department of Otolaryngology and Director of the Tinnitus Clinic.

Brian Mason

Brian Mason, a senior software engineer with Chrome Systems, has a strong technical background in software engineering and information systems infrastructure technologies. He has been a speaker at Java One in San Francisco for the past three years.

Diana Mati

Diana Mati, a technology consultant with 15 years experience in instructional and technical support, also teaches for the TAG program and the Legacy Health Care Oasis program.

Darcy McCallum

Darcy McCallum is a manager at Mentor Graphics Corporation. He has a Master’s Degree in Computer Science and over 15 years experience. He has also taught at the university level.

Kristine McCoy

Kris McCoy, a former high school math teacher, tutors and teaches math classes for TAG students.

Dan Meador has a degree in Computer Science, is a business owner and has been working in the high tech industry for over 25 years.

Joan Moura

Joan Moura, a science educator for 20 years, is a high school science teacher and has taught students of all ages. She was a finalist for the 1999 Oregon State Presidential Awards for Excellence in Secondary Science.

Sharon Niemczyk

Sharon Niemczyk has served as Animator-in-Residence for the Portland Art Museum Northwest Film Center’s Young Filmmakers Program for many years.

Biologist Nancy Noble raises rare and endangered animals for reintroduction into their native habitat. Belinda Mendehall is a 2nd year veterinary student at OSU.

Roger Oakes

Roger Oakes is a science teacher at Lakeridge High School. He also consults, designs and builds custom speakers, and installs home audio systems.

Susan Olson

Susan Olson, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics at OHSU.

John Oppedisano

John Oppedisano taught high school math for over 33 years, and has been teaching SAT and PSAT preparation courses for over 20 years.

Bruce Orr

Bruce Orr is a professional illustrator, puppeteer and arts educator. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a master’s degree in Art Therapy. He taught art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for 8 years and self-publishes his own comic books, Thred and Bucket Loader.

Rosanne Parry

Rosanne Parry is a teacher for public and private schools who specializes in reading and math. She has taught study skills for Saturday Academy for eight years.

Edwin Pilobello

Edwin Pilobello has been a programmer for the past 25 years. He is a Microsoft and Visual NQC Developer and a Robolab beta tester.

Molly Porterfield

Molly Porterfield has a B.A. in Music from Lewis & Clark College and a diploma in Jazz Piano from Berklee College in Boston. She works professionally as a pianist & composer. She has a private piano studio, teaches music theory for Portland Conservatory Orchestra, and Children's music & movement classes at Southwest Music School.

Donna Prinzmetal

Poet Donna Prinzmetal has taught creative writing for seventeen years to students of all ages, and currently teaches for the TAG program and Community of Writers.

Liz Randall

Liz Randall, a graduate of the Cornish College of the Arts, is an animator, editor, and photographer who has taught animation for multiple organizations including 911 Media Arts.

Meenakshi Rao

Meenakshi Rao has a Master's degree in Physics from Louisiana State University, as well as a Master's degree in Computer Science from Oregon Graduate Institute.  She has developed software for the financial and electronic CAD industries and tested commercial websites and a 3-D modeling package.

Ellen Regal

Ellen Regal, a freelance photographer for over 20 years, specializes in black and white portraits. Her work has appeared in print and broadcast advertising, documentary films and slide presentations.

Brian Rhodefer

Brian Rhodefer is a firmware design engineer for Tektronix.

Mary Rice

Mary Rice, PhD, is Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology and Director of Echocardiography Laboratory at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Ross Ungerleider MD, Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon. Irving Shen MD, Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon. Andrew Hoyer MD, Fellow in Pediatric Cardiology. Anoop Singh MD. Fellow in Pediatric Cardiology. Rich Reed PA, Physician's Assistant in Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery.

Kathleen Richardson

Dr. Kathleen Richardson is a research microbiologist, a bioremediation consultant and an educator. She is a full-time instructor at Portland Community College.

Steve Robertson

Steve Robertson is the Audubon Society of Portland’s Education Director.

Marjorie Rosenberg

Gigi Rosenberg, a freelance writer who  teaches for Community of Writers, is a workshop leader for Writer's Circle, and a writing coach for PlayWrite, Inc. She is an experienced curriculum designer, elementary school writing resident and writing coach for middle and high school students.

Mary Rosenblum

Mary Rosenblum writes Science Fiction, and also writes mysteries as Mary Freeman. A Hugo nominee and winner of the Asimov's Readers' Award, she has published three Science Fiction novels and four mysteries to date, as well as a hardcover collection of her short stories and more than 60 short stories.Her work will appear this year in Fantasy and Science Fiction, Asimov's Magazine, Analog Magazine and various anthologies.

Jim Rulla

Jim Rulla, Ph.D., is the former Chair of the Math, Physics and Computer Science Division at Lyon College. In 1998 he received the Carnegie Foundation’s Arkansas Professor of the Year Award.

Mark Rutledge-Gorman

Mark Rutledge-Gorman, Ph.D., is Senior Research Associate, Department of Behavioral Neuroscience.

Anne Rybak

Anne Rybak, a photographer and graphic designer, owns and operates Anne Rybak Photographic. She is on the faculty of Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Sara Salvi

Sara Salvi, the Chair of the English Department at St. Mary’s Academy, has a Master’s Degree in Irish Literature from Trinity College in Dublin.

Deanna Sawtelle

Deanna Sawtelle is on staff at the Birds of Prey Center.

Katie Schneider

Katie Schneider is a published novelist and has worked with children since 1991. She currently teaches in Portland area schools through Community of Writers. Her debut novel All We Know of Love was a Book-of-The-Month Club Main Selection.

James Schwartz

James Schwartz, BSN, RN, specializes in trauma and neurosurgical intensive care.

Nancy Scott

Nancy Scott is a biologist with a Masters degree from Portland State University. She has been researching the chemical ecology of Asian elephants at the Oregon Zoo and other facilities since 1995.

Isaka Shamsud-Din

Isaka Shamsud-Din is an assistant professor of art at PSU and the first to hold the James DePreist Visiting Professorship in Ethnic Art. He is a noted African-American artist, painter and muralist whose work has appeared in the Portland Art Museum and in Reed College’s collection.

Barbara Shaw

Barbara J. Shaw is a PhD candidate at Portland State University studying the morphological and biomechanical evolution of sloths, anteaters and armadillos. She has taught science over 16 years for youth organizations, science museums, national wildlife organizations and PSU.

Emily Shields

Emily shields has a masters in biology. She has studied at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology and is a former middle school science teacher.

Derek Shirk

Derek A Shirk, with a BS in Multimedia Design from the University of Oregon, is a multimedia graphic designer focusing on interactive Flash development, digital illustration, print and package design.

Verle Smith

Verle Smith taught math and Advanced Placement Computer Science for thirty years. He is an adjunct professor at Portland Community College.

Susan Stutz

An advanced graphic design instructor at PSU, Susan Stutz has also worked as a freelance editor.

Lynn Takata

Lynn Takata is a Portland artist who is nationally known for creating award winning public art with children.

Nichole Tassonia

Nichole Tassonia, with a Master of Arts in English Education, has five years experience teaching middle and high school English. She has taught and designed curriculum for OIB (Option Internationale Baccalaureat) English, and an AP program for French Students.

Dave Thom

Dave Thom, with over 30 years experience in the electronics industry, has taught Electronics Engineering for Sabin-Schellenberg Technology Center for 26 years. He is currently involved with an engineering group creating a high-resolution local area positioning system for personnel tracking.

Wendy Thompson

Wendy Thompson taught writing at the Vancouver School of Arts & Academics for six years. She is currently a freelance write and arts education consultant.

Jill Turner

Jill Turner, a biology instructor at PCC Rock Creek, has a Master's degree in Plant Biology from PSU.

Nancy Umeda

Nancy Umeda has a BA in Science from Marylhurst University. She is currently working on her Masters.

Kirby Urner

Kirby Urner, with a BA in philosophy from Princeton University, is a computer programmer and educator. He has developed computer literacy products for McGraw-Hill and is a former high school mathematics teacher.

Barbara Welty

Barbara Welty holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree and teaches a variety of art classes throughout the Portland metropolitan area.

Dana Weesner

Dana Weesner, a retired high school computer teacher, has been a member of the Portland Area Robotics Society for more than six years and has built many robots based on PIC microcontrollers.

Stuart Weiss

Stuart Weiss, a former Business Week magazine editor, holds an MBA from Stanford and a BS from UCLA.

James Weston

James Weston has a Masters Degree in English and Education and a PhD from Purdue University.

Patrick White

Patrick White, a senior software engineer with 14 years experience, has a strong technical background in software engineering and object oriented design.

Gerald White

Gerald White is a performing artist, piano instructor and composer. He taught middle and high school students social studies for more than 13 years through history of music, world geography and history classes.

Diane Whitfield

Diane Whitfield is a Product Specialist for Casio Inc. and part-time Mathematics instructor at Portland Community  College.

Doug Whitmore

Doug Whitmore has a Master of Arts in Teaching and is an instructor at Oregon Episcopal School.

Barbara Wickham

Barbara Wickham has a degree in science education with multi-state certifications. She is a National Science Foundation Fellow in Global Environmental Studies and was contracted by Nike to present their Environmental Program to teachers.

John Wickham

John K. Wickham, MA in Educational Technology, is a Web Design and Technology instructor at Stoller Middle School and Portland Community College.

Larry Wiedenhoft

Larry Wiedenhoft is Software Engineer with IBM Corporation in Beaverton. He has over ten years experience with object-oriented programming and has taught Java and C for the past five years.

Sharon Wood-Wortman, M.Ed., is a historian and writer who uses Portland as a classroom to teach hundreds of students (of all ages) each year. She is the author of The Portland Bridge Book (3rd edition, revised and expanded) forthcoming in 2006.

Wanda Yantis, a hardware and software engineer, is a programmer for Multnomah County. Brian Rhodefer is a firmware design engineer for Tektronix.
