In the rare case that a school does not have the necessary technology for these classes, Saturday Academy may be able to provide a portable computer lab for its class use only. The user fee for the portable lab is $100 per course.
Create a Web SiteCombine your creative talents and technology skills as you learn the basics of web page design. Create your own five page web site in a Macintosh or PC environment. You will learn the basics of HTML, how to make images web ready in Photoshop and how to add video and sound to your web pages. Then create slide shows of your photographs in Flash and put them on your web site. The emphasis will be on original content, images, and multimedia enhancements. Grades: 6-8 (Computer Lab Required)
Game MakerCreate a video game using Game Maker technology. Learn how to design and modify your own exciting PC game by studying examples from Game Maker and analyzing the codes used. Look at games like Pong to learn to control characters, objects, and outcomes in your game. Then increase the difficulty level and add more features. If you have always wanted to design a speed racing game or a version of PacMan, Mario, or Dragon Drop, this class will provide the techniques you need. Grades: 4-6 or 6-8 (PC Computer Lab required)
Robo PetsDesign and construct a robotic animal and program it to act like the real thing. You will build your Robo Pet using the Lego Mindstorm system. Make full use of light, rotation, and touch sensors to gather data and program robots. How fast can it move? Does your Robo Pet like the dark? Does it like to be petted? What happens when you pull its tail? Learn about computer programming and build a pet you never have to feed. Grades: 5-8 (PC Computer Lab Required)
Robotic EngineeringBuild and control Lego Mindstorm robots. Use computer programming basics, touch, light, rotation, and temperature sensors to gather data and program robots. Your robots will be able to navigate a map, transport materials, communicate with each other and even play a rousing game of “Capture the Flag.” Grades: 3-5 or 6-8 (PC Computer Lab Required)
Whiz Kids: Computer BasicsDevelop computer skills in beginning drawing and word processing programs. Learn keyboarding, how to find and use Clipart, and some basic internet skills. Spiff up your school reports, make cards for your friends, and learn computer research skills. Grades: 1-3 (Computer Lab Required)
