Director of Classes

Type: Exempt

Hours: Full-time

Salary: DOE; range 55,000-65,000; full medical, dental, 401K and disability benefits

BACKGROUND

Founded in 1983, Saturday Academy (www.saturdayacademy.org) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization that has helped over 175,000 young people (approximately 7000 enrollments/year) experience hands-on learning with community experts in a way that enriches young lives and develops a life-long curiosity and passion for learning. Saturday Academy offers classes, summer camps, and afterschool programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan area (grades 2-12) and a high school internship program that is state-wide.  We inspire children to learn in nearly every field, but concentrate on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) due to the fast pace of change in these fields and the demand for more technologically advanced education by the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Classes is responsible for the overall operation of the Saturday Academy Classes & Camps Program and works closely with community partners to provide creative, hands-on learning opportunities for youth.  S/he is an integral member of the senior management team of Saturday Academy and reports to the Executive Director. This position supervises two program staff members.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Ensure high quality programming that is mission focused
  • Oversee planning, design, development, delivery and evaluation of the Classes Program, including more than 500 open enrollment classes and 15 summer day camps each year
  • Design and implementation of innovative class models
  • Oversight of all aspects of day-to-day program activities
  • Instructor recruitment and relationships
  • Development and implementation of strategies to increase minority enrollment and minority instructors
  • School-Based  classes (LEAP Program) development, program staff and delivery
  • Develop and monitor Classes Program budget
  • Complete statistical evaluation of classes to track trends
  • Work with team members to develop grant proposals and marketing activities
  • Work with many community partners and education leaders to maintain state-of-the-art educational experiences

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful individual with a vision for high quality education for all children and who enjoys working with diverse groups of people
  • A passion for inspiring children to learn
  • A Bachelors, advanced degree or comparable experience
  • Teaching and/or career experience in STEM fields, curriculum development, and experience with hands-on and inquiry-based learning
  • Management experience including developing and monitoring complex budgets, analysis of program performance and personnel
  • Good computer skills with experience in Access, Salesforce or other CRM
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and get things done
  • Superior writing and public speaking skills
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree or certifications (MS, MA, MAT, PhD)
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience in both education and STEM business or research sectors
  • Experience in K-12 evaluation and assessment

AmeriCorps VISTA Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator

Hours: Full Time

Type: AmeriCorps VISTA Member

Summary of Position and Project Goal:

Saturday Academy engages 2nd-12th grade students in hands-on out-of-school learning by connecting them to community experts as instructors and mentors. Underserved students in our programs benefit from personalized instruction, interaction with professionals, and introduction to new fields and hands-on exploration. The VISTA will work to increase our ability to engage volunteers and build our capacity to educate underserved students by strengthening community partnerships. Through VISTA, Saturday Academy will be able to better serve communities of color and students from low-income households through direct outreach, financial aid, efficient use of volunteer time, and partnerships with other local organizations and schools.

 Site Specific Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Outreach to local organizations and schools connected to underserved students, learn about the needs of their students, and advocate for the development of sustainable partnerships with Saturday Academy
  • Attend relevant community events as a representative of Saturday Academy
  • Coordinate with community partners to serve their students in Saturday Academy programs
  • Develop a sustainable volunteer program to engage community members in service to our students, including but not limited to writing volunteer position descriptions and a volunteer training handbook

AmeriCorps VISTA Member Responsibilities:

  • Attend all Campus Compact of Oregon AmeriCorps VISTA required trainings and events
  • Complete and submit all Campus Compact of Oregon AmeriCorps VISTA required progress reports, timesheets, and other paperwork

 Required Qualifications:

  • 18 years and older
  • Must have at least an Associates Degree
  • Demonstrate a commitment to or willingness to explore issues of racial justice and equity
  • A U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident
  • Able to serve full-time for 365 days
  • Ability to pass a criminal history background check
  • Site Specific Requirements:
    – A valid Driver’s License and access to personal vehicle
    – Customer service, account management, or partnership management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project management experience
  • Volunteer coordinating experience
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office software
  • Conversational or fluent Spanish speaking abilities
  • A passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)

ASE Program Assistant

Hours: Full Time

Type: Non-exempt

Saturday Academy offers classes, summer camps, and afterschool programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan area (grades 2-12) and a high school internship program that is state-wide. The internship program, Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE: www.saturdayacademy.org/ase), places and supports approximately 150 students per year in grades 9-11 in full-time, summer internships in industry, research, government agencies, and nonprofits. At Saturday Academy, we inspire children to learn in nearly every field, but concentrate on science, technology, engineering, math due to the fast pace of change in these fields and the demand for more technologically advanced education by the community.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The ASE Program Assistant is responsible for assisting internal staff with various aspects of the ASE program. Acting as an information specialist and customer service representative, this position will support activities related to recruitment of mentors to host students in internships as well as students applying to the program. This position will work primarily in an office setting, though may travel to sites to recruit students and mentors and to all major program events, including workshops, orientations, and conferences.

The successful candidate should be a self-starter, enjoy helping people and have a commitment to education in addition to having excellent data entry proficiency, attention to details, word processing and spreadsheet skills, and a good customer service manner.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Supports mentor and student recruitment activities, working closely with the ASE Program Director and ASE Program Coordinator.
  • Database, email lists, and data entry duties (Salesforce) for the program.
  • Creates and manages queries and reporting as needed.
  • Works closely with Operations team on program processes and supply procurement.
  • Participates in the planning and delivery of program events at various locations, including, but not limited to, Information Sessions, Orientations, and Conferences.
  • Develops content and curates resources for social media (blogs, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc)
  • Monitors the general program email account and responds to inquiries.
  • Communicates with key partners regarding program outcomes.
  • Manages shifting responsibilities throughout the program cycle.
  • Attends and represents SA at fundraising events, and other SA activities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience, preferably in a STEM field.
  • Exceptional computer skills, including experience manipulating data in spreadsheets, word processing, and web and online form tools (e.g. Formsite, Survey Monkey). A strong preference for database experience (e.g. Salesforce, Access) is desired.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Customer service experience.
  • High level of oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in nonprofits, STEM education, and a commitment to Saturday Academy’s mission.
  • Valid Driver’s License, good driving record, reliable transportation.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.

 Non-Profit Management College Interns

Hours: 10 hour/week for full academic year

Type: Internship

Salary:  $12.50/hour ($4,000 for 8 months)

BACKGROUND:

The mission of Saturday Academy (SA: www.saturdayacademy.org) is to engage children in learning with sufficient depth that they will become life-long learners. We provide out-of-school time hands-on classes and summer day camps, afterschool programs, accelerated learning programs for talented and gifted students, and a high school apprenticeship program in science and engineering (ASE). Since  1983, SA has served over 170,000 students and currently serves approximately 7000 each year. SA partners with over 60 institutions each year that provide computer and science laboratories, space, or mentorships. SA is affiliated with the University of Portland (UP) and our headquarters are on the UP campus in North Portland.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Saturday Academy seeks two college students for paid internships to learn about the administration and management of a non-profit organization. The two interns will learn about our education model and the workings of an education nonprofit. At Saturday Academy, we learn by doing. The interns will rotate through each of Saturday Academy’s programs doing projects to gain an overview of the organization as well as contribute meaningfully to the organization. One intern will focus on Marketing for the nonprofit to expand the community who knows about our work. They will also work closely with the Communications Director to advance the visibility of our programs. Another intern will focus on nonprofit management including Board management and the work of the Executive Director. This internship program is supported by the Goodman Foundation and supports Saturday Academy’s mission to expand educational opportunities for youth.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A current college student with junior or senior status by Fall 2016.
  • An independent and creative individual who enjoys working with diverse groups of people.
  • An interest in the non-profit sector and nonprofit management.
  • Strong administrative computer skills including data entry proficiency, word processing, spreadsheet, database, web research and social media experience
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evening or weekend events.
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record and own transportation.
  • Ability to begin by September 1, 2016, and intern until May/June

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • For the marketing intern: experience with social media platforms, website revisions, news releases, electronic newsletters, crowd funding campaigns.
  • For the executive director intern: experience in large scale decision making, and excellent communication skills.

Since it was founded in 1983, SA has served over 165,000 students and currently serves approximately 6,000 students each year. SA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization affiliated with the University of Portland (UP). Instructors need to be experts in their fields so that children see adults as guides to learning and careers.

If you have an expertise that you would love to pass on to children, but you are not an experienced teacher, we provide resources, classes and workshops to prepare you to be successful.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Saturday Academy instructor you are responsible to teach a hands-on, age-appropriate class that engages your students and inspires their curiosity. Instructors prepare  class materials and lesson plans with the support of SA staff. Close coordination and communication with all staff members at Saturday Academy is essential.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience, preferably in a STEM field
  • A passion for inspiring children to learn
  • Career experience in STEAM fields in the academic and/or corporate sector

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with hands-on and inquiry-based learning
