Director of Classes

Type: Exempt

Hours: Full-time

Salary: DOE; range 53,000-65,000; full medical, dental, 401K and disability benefits

BACKGROUND

Founded in 1983, Saturday Academy (www.saturdayacademy.org) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization that has helped over 175,000 young people (approximately 7000 enrollments/year) experience hands-on learning with community experts in a way that enriches young lives and develops a life-long curiosity and passion for learning. Saturday Academy offers classes, summer camps, and afterschool programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan area (grades 2-12) and a high school internship program that is state-wide We inspire children to learn in nearly every field, but concentrate on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) due to the fast pace of change in these fields. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Classes is responsible for the vision and overall operation of the Saturday Academy Classes & Camps Program and works closely with community partners to provide creative, hands-on learning opportunities for youth.  S/he is an integral member of the senior management team of Saturday Academy and reports to the Executive Director. This position supervises two program staff members and works very closely with our operations team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Ensures high quality programming that inspires curiosity in children
  • Oversees planning, design, development, delivery and evaluation of the Classes Program, including more than 500 innovative open enrollment classes and 15 day camps each year
  • Oversight of all aspects of day-to-day program activities
  • Oversees Instructor recruitment and relationships
  • Develops strategies to increase enrollment of underserved students and recruitment of diverse instructors
  • Helps to further develop our School-Based program (SA2U Program) and staff
  • Develops and monitors Classes Program budget (approx. $1M)
  • Completes statistical evaluation of classes and tracks education trends at SA as well as nation-wide
  • Works with team members to develop grant proposals and marketing activities
  • Works with many community partners and education leaders to maintain state-of-the-art educational experiences

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful individual with a vision for high quality education for all children and who enjoys working with diverse groups of people
  • A passion for inspiring children to learn
  • A Bachelors, advanced degree or comparable experience
  • Significant teaching and/or career experience in STEM fields, curriculum development, and experience with hands-on and inquiry-based learning
  • Management experience including developing and monitoring complex budgets, analysis of program performance and personnel
  • Excellent computer skills and enjoys working with data
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and get things done
  • Superior writing and public speaking skills
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weeken Summertime is the busiest time for this program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree or certifications (MS, MA, MAT, PhD)
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience in both education and STEM business or research sectors
  • Experience in K-12 evaluation and assessmen
  • Experience in Salesforce or other CRM

Part-Time Instructors

Type: Temporary, Part-Time

Hours: Flexible

Salary: Volunteer OR $30 per class hour

BACKGROUND

The mission of Saturday Academy (SA: www.saturdayacademy.org) is to engage children through in-depth learning so they may become life-long learners. We provide hands-on classes and camps, afterschool programs, accelerated learning programs for talented and gifted students, and a high school apprenticeship program in science and engineering (ASE). Since it was founded in 1983, SA has served over 165,000 students and currently serves approximately 6,000 students each year. SA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization affiliated with the University of Portland (UP). Instructors need to be experts in their fields so that children see adults as guides to learning and careers.

If you have an expertise that you would love to pass on to children, but you are not an experienced teacher, we provide resources, classes and workshops to prepare you to be successful.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Saturday Academy instructor you are responsible to teach a hands-on, age-appropriate class that engages your students and inspires their curiosity. Instructors prepare  class materials and lesson plans with the support of SA staff. Close coordination and communication with all staff members at Saturday Academy is essential.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience, preferably in a STEM field
  • A passion for inspiring children to learn
  • Career experience in STEAM fields in the academic and/or corporate sector

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with hands-on and inquiry-based learning
