Learn the principles and methods used by industry engineers to design mechanical systems. The class will cover robotics and automation, with an overview of the standard components and machines used in industry. Students will develop CAD skills in a full-featured program (Autodesk Inventor) that will allow them to create 3D designs in both a hobby and industrial environment. The class will culminate in a final project, which will consist of a 3D computer model of a complex mechanical system. Students will be invited to come up with a project topic of their own, or choose from a list of topics provided by the instructor. The project will use real-world mechanical components sourced from McMaster-Carr. The final component of the class will consist of learning Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles and if time allows creating 3D printed replicas of the final project.
