This position is located in Governance and Internal Controls (CGC), Compliance and Governance (CG), Compliance, Audit and Risk (C), at Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). The purpose of this position is, in a developmental capacity and under closer than normal supervision, to serve as an internal controls compliance specialist responsible for assisting with analytical and evaluative work related to the organization’s compliance activities and issues. Internal controls ensure that an entity (in this case BPA) is achieving its objectives effectively and efficiently, and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
The selected interns will be responsible for assisting with planning, scheduling and conducting compliance driven projects and initiatives to determine and improve the effectiveness of BPA internal control systems and processes, which are functionally critical for successful management and internal control of BPA’s missions and objectives and regulatory affairs.
MAJOR DUTIES
1. (30%) Works with the team lead to assist in the tracking and monitoring of regulations that apply to BPA, managing Delegations of Authority, and implementing BPA policy and standards.
2. (30%) Works with the team lead to maintain required internal control program documentation, coordinate internal briefings and training regarding internal controls and policy program requirements.
3. (40%) As directed by the team lead, works with other internal organizations to help ensure internal controls and policies are documented. Assists with evaluation of that documentation against generally accepted and benchmarked criteria including risk analysis, business and financial analysis, legal assessment, governmental regulations, and standards and other criteria as deemed appropriate. Assists with documenting the work, findings, and other results in work papers and related media. Based on those analyses, assists with the preparation of various reports to management.
By the end of the internship, the intern will gain:
- Knowledge of analytical evaluative methods, techniques, and criteria sufficient to assist with planning, scheduling and conducting compliance driven projects and initiatives to determine internal compliance program effectiveness.
- Skill in effective oral and written communication sufficient to assist with; communicating complex technical requirements to non-technical personnel; engaging clients and customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations; developing briefings, project papers, status/staff reports, and correspondence to foster understanding and acceptance of findings and recommendations.
- Knowledge of the elements of team effectiveness such as group dynamics, effective listening and response, and group decision making and problem solving in order to work effectively as a team member.
- Experience in choosing, interpreting, or adapting available guidelines to specific issues or subjects studied.
The work involves assisting with the planning, scheduling and conducting compliance driven projects and initiatives in a procedural manner to determine and improve the effectiveness of BPA internal control programs, systems, and processes which are functionally critical for successful management and internal control of BPA’s missions and objectives and regulatory affairs. The work involves already accepted analytical techniques to assist with gathering information and identifying and analyzing issues. Projects assigned consist of issues, problems, or concepts that are procedural. Assignments involve assisting with compiling, reconciling, and correlating voluminous data from a variety of sources with different reporting requirements and formats; and the data must be carefully cross checked, analyzed, and interpreted to obtain accurate and relevant information.
The work is sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required in stooping, kneeling, or bending. Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled office. May require occasional travel. Students must be minimum age specified by May 15. These age requirements are strictly enforced by the mentoring organization, and there are no exceptions.
