BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1983, Saturday Academy (SA) is a nonprofit educational organization that helps thousands of youth experience hands-on learning with community experts in a way that enriches young lives and develops a life-long curiosity and passion for learning. Saturday Academy offers classes, summer camps, and afterschool programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan area (grades 2-12) as well as a state-wide high school internship program placing students in some of Oregon’s most well-known businesses. We inspire children to pursue their curiosity, but concentrate our programming on topics in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Saturday Academy operates on a less than $1 million annual budget and is invested in building up the administrative and financial infrastructure to adequately support the growing organization.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Saturday Academy seeks a proactive, collaborative, highly organized, mission-oriented, critical-thinking leader to join a team of talented staff, educators, and Board Members in the role of Youth Programs Manager. The position offers a unique opportunity to oversee and guide a robust community footprint. This person stewards critical school and community partnerships through our School Residency Program as well as develops and runs our robust Summer Camp Program. Our School Residency Program spans the full year cycle- Fall, Winter, and Spring. They function as the primary oversight for our Summer Camp Program, ensuring strong curriculum development and student/educator support. Additionally, they support ensuring a high quality student experience in our Classes and Days Off Workshops Program. Classes run on Saturday afternoons and Days Off on days when specific school districts are out, but families have to work (a total of 6 in a year).
This individual must be a mission-focused team player who can build authentic relationships, drive curriculum development, demonstrate excellent warm customer service in partnership development, and have the capacity to teach and assist in programming as needed. They function as an energetic role model and supervisor. They must be fiscally savvy, developing the budget and managing with financial integrity.This position will report to the Executive Director and will be supported by a Youth Programs Coordinator and specific consultants throughout the year.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
YOUTH PROGRAMS:
- Collaborate on School Residency strategy, overseeing the implementation of our School Residency Programs. This includes coordinating, matching, contracting, and hiring all educators.
- Facilitates lesson planning meetings and functions as a primary sound board for SA educators.
- Developing meaningful relationships to K-12 schools throughout the state.
- Lead curriculum development initiatives for nimble and agile programming.
- Assess needs of programs, hiring all educators for our Residency and Camps Programs and providing oversight to hiring for Classes/Days Off.
- Providing necessary administrative support to Youth Programs building relationships to parents.
- Supporting community building initiatives for educators, professional development opportunities,and cross-trainings on Saturday Academy developed curriculum.
- Tracking data for youth programs using Salesforce and Excel.
- Represent Saturday Academy at tabling opportunities in the community to promote Youth Programs.
- Primary supervisor for our Summer Camp Programs, working with the Operations team on load-on/our plans, developing partnerships, and managing curriculum development.
- Functions as a sub for Youth Programs as needed.
- Collaborate with Operations as it relates to supply management for Youth Programs.
- Provide oversight and feedback to educators through observation and quality control efforts.
- Maintain strong awareness of cutting edge trends and approaches to innovative hands-on learning.
- Planning summer orientation for educators and various trainings as needed throughout the year for our educator roster.
- Maintain, with the support of the Ops team, our supply inventory and storage spaces.
DEVELOPMENT:
- Coordinate Youth Programs aspects of the annual Gala and provide necessary data for Development department as needed.
- Strategize on deployment of data collecting and ensure records and data are well-kept and strong reporting practices are in place.
- Report quarterly on progress of shared goals and outcomes with a variety of populations at SA.
- Sit on the Board Engagement Committee.
MARKETING:
- Provide necessary copy for marketing materials and website related to specific Youth Programs.
- Function as liaison between parent and school communities and various departments as SA.
- Other duties as assigned.
DESIRED SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE:
- Passionate commitment to the transformative power of hands-on learning.
- Background or previous experience in running youth programs with a strong backbone in curriculum development a must.
- Financial savviness, bringing a balanced mindset to our financial integrity, essential.
- Previous experience managing budgets helpful.
- Ability to manage and support an employee, lean into team collaboration, but also able to work independently and make informed difficult decisions in terms of time and energy investments. Previous supervisory experience celebrated.
- Be an excellent communicator both in writing and orally. This position may be asked to appear in public spaces, sharing information about our programming.
- A self-motivated and creative individual who enjoys working with diverse populations and maintaining positive working relationships.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skill; proven ability to meet deadlines and get things done.
- A demonstrated passion for inspiring children to learn.
- Experience coaching/managing/evaluating programs, part-time employees, and volunteers.
- Demonstrated experience with Justice, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access.
- Understanding of the relationships youth may have with STEAM based on class, race, lived experience and gender.
- Proactive individual with a strong collaborative work ethic and the ability to work independently.
- Previous experience and commitment to work with diverse cultural communities, bringing a social justice mindset to the work each day.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule inspired by programming needs. Occasional weekends and evenings required.
- Must be able to lift and move boxes of books and supplies, (up to 30 pounds each) and transport supplies in and out of vehicles, storage areas, or classrooms.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
