STEAM Career Tracks

Career & Professional Development | Career Exploration

Introduction

STEAM Career Tracks launched in 2021 with the intention to connect like-minded students to opportunities to advance their career skills and gain exposure to professionals in industry. It is entirely grant funded by generous foundations and corporations dedicated to the Oregon and Southwest Washington community.

STEAM Career Tracks is an invite-only 16 week program which gives high school students the opportunity to refine hard and soft skills in preparation for careers in science, technology, engineering and math related fields. The program consists of virtual professional development classes from September through December to build the confidence and tools to apply for internships, jobs or college training programs. Additionally, several weekend career exploration workshops will be offered by STEM professionals to explore a wide variety of careers and roles.

STEAM Career Tracks is designed to foster skills of communication, collaboration and critical-thinking, in addition to focused work on developing resumes/cover letters, interviewing skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging in the STEAM & STEM spaces. STEAM Career Tracks connects participants to STEM professionals through hands-on workshops, industry & lab tours, professional development, and networking opportunities. Importantly, STEAM Career Tracks connects students who have the same passions and interests, and creates a supportive environment for skill building and career exploration.

Importantly, students will be asked to submit final deliverables upon completion of the program to showcase their learning in the areas of professional and personal development.

Upon completion of the program and submission of deliverables, participants will receive a $500 stipend.

Schedule

STEAM Career tracks runs annually in the fall. Program staff contact eligible students beginning in the summer. To express interest, or ask a question about this program, please email SCT@saturdayacademy.org.

Program Instructors

Yessica Cristal Santana Agreda

Yessica is a 3rd year Neuroscience Ph.D. Candidate at Oregon Health & Science University. Originally from North Hollywood, California, Yessica majored in Global Studies with the intention of going to law school for patent law. In undergrad, she was drawn towards scientific research instead and changed careers after graduating by completing two post-baccalaureate programs. Yessica is a current instructor for the STEAM Career Tracks course for Fall 2022 and has a passion for increasing equity in career resources for historically disadvantaged communities, such as her own. She is also an Executive Board Member for Cientifico Latino, an online resource and mentorship hub for underrepresented scientists of all career stages.

Rispa Vranka Wafula

Rispa is a third-year undergraduate student at Oregon State University Honors College, who is currently studying Bioengineering and Neuroscience. She plans to continue into graduate school and earn a PhD in bioengineering, but is also interested in patent law as an additional career choice. Rispa is originally from Portland, OR and the highlight of her high school experience there was doing competitive robotics, which solidified her passion for science and engineering. Rispa is a current instructor for the STEAM Career Tracks course in Fall 2022 and is thrilled to play an active role in supporting underrepresented communities and individuals to thrive in the STEAM world.
