Since 1990, the Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering Program, known widely as ASE, has been providing life-changing career connected learning opportunities to Oregon and SW Washington high school students. As the world continues to evolve, so has ASE, expanding to include internships outside of the original scope of “science & engineering” to meet the diverse interests of our students, align with our STEAM-driven mission, and spark curiosity for generations to come.
In the past five years we have offered internships in finance, filmmaking, user experience (UX) design, community engagement, and teaching. To reflect this growth, we have shifted the meaning of the ASE acronym so that it more accurately describes the internship experiences we strive to offer.
Introducing ASE: Apprenticeships in STEAM Exploration!
With this redefined acronym we celebrate the interconnectedness of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math across disciplines in modern career pathways. We appreciate that this inclusive name creates belonging in a wide range of identities and invites new host partners in our community to support and inspire the next generation of STEAM innovators.
Sincerely,
Allison Fritts-Penniman, PhD
