This week many have said of our leaders “Say something!” We are leaders in education and this is what we have to say:
“We stand in solidarity with our communities of color and all vulnerable and marginalized communities. We will not let white supremacy flourish. We denounce the actions of this hateful group. We continue as allies – even more so now when it’s needed the most. We lend safe space, solace and give our commitment to fighting against hate as an organization. We yield our privilege so that we can best aid those who have not been offered the same in this country. “
At our staff meeting we talked about our thoughts about Charlottesville and what we want to do as an organization. Here are of some of the responses:
- What can students learn or do after last weekend’s events?
- Talk with parents, mentors and teachers about what white supremacy is and find out more about the history of race and oppression in this country.
- Follow your curiosity when confronted with racism:
- Do you think some people are truly better than others based on their race?
- How can you refute racism based on your own values and experiences?
- Challenge yourself to challenge adults and others when they express racist ideas.
- I believe that curiosity and learning opens minds.
- I think that SA strives to help all children follow their curiosity regardless of race, religion, gender, ability to pay, etc. We strive to provide a safe and equitable learning environment for them and we continue to do this regardless of the current political climate.
- Learning requires an open mind.
- SA believes that all children should have access to joyous, creative learning experiences without hatred and fear. We take a stand to ensure that we continue to fulfill our mission and embrace moving forward through education and learning about the world and each other.
- I know that SA promotes ideas and their expression in a welcoming and supportive environment.
- Critical thinking skills are essential to creating inclusive and equitable communities.
- We welcome all open minds to learn.SA is committed to embracing and encouraging diversity in our programs.
- SA is a place where curiosity is limitless and no one is judged. It’s a place where all individuals are seen as valuable, worthy and accepted. It is a place where hate, violence and bigotry will not be tolerated. It’s a place where being white does not offer you greater privilege.
Saturday Academy staff and our board have been participating in a year-long equity training through the Center for Equity and Inclusion. We continue our work both individually and as a staff to build a more inclusive and equitable environment at Saturday Academy, in our spheres of influence and beyond.
