First Tech Credit Union Volunteers at Saturday Academy

By Lauren Miranda, Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator, AmeriCorps VISTA
Jun 22, 2017

As the Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator for Saturday Academy, I am tasked with cultivating partnerships and creating community relationships. When I started my position seven months ago, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what those partnerships would look like and how they would function. But that’s the beauty Saturday Academy and our community engagement-not one partnership looks like the other. Each relationship built with another organization has its own unique give and take. My first go at creating a partnership was such an enjoyable experience. I have the wonderful team at First Tech Credit Union to thank for that. Through their community engagement team we hosted a LEGO sorting party with 60+ of their staff members and we presented a workshop to spark creativity at their leadership conference with a hands-on creating space activities.

What is a LEGO sorting party you may ask? Exactly what it sounds like! Saturday Academy offers a plethora of classes using LEGOs to explore subjects like engineering, robotics, physics-you name it! But anyone who has experience with LEGOs knows that they can get quite jumbled about and disorganized. That’s where First Tech Credit Union employees came in and saved the day. I brought over 30 LEGO robotics kits to their main office, set them up in a large conference room with directions and then employees flooded the room! People were teaming up to complete kits with each other, digging through tubs of tiny bits and shouting across the room to offer up extra pieces to a colleague! Nostalgic comments could be heard here and there as grown adults relished in the joy of playing with LEGOs, spending time with their fellow colleagues while giving back to the community. Our partnership would not be possible without the willing and eager employees of First Tech Credit Union who have shown great dedication in their philanthropic pursuit. Thank you to First Tech Credit Union’s community engagement team and the incredible work they are doing in their organization and for Saturday Academy.
