Partnership Highlight: Iris Oregon & Creative Storytelling and Movie Making

Meet filmmakers Bill Synder and Shane Phillips of Iris Oregon, a nonprofit dedicated to offering a creative safe space for self-expression and teaching youth the creative process and communication skills. They are teaching the brand new class Creative Storytelling and Movie Making at Saturday Academy Beaverton in our Winter/Spring term!

Bill Synder, a retired government worker, has always felt passionate about film and the beauty of storytelling. Bill met Shane Phillips, a filmmaker with a background in reality TV and local film projects, and collaborated on film projects, creative marketing, and running a production company called Potoo for over six years.

In their love of film, they both recognize the difficulty of breaking into the film industry. There are so many barriers in place that for newcomers, the industry seems impossible to traverse. Bill and Shane saw a need in the community to teach young people and newcomers what they had to learn the hard way, including how to pitch and communicate a project. Iris Oregon's classes allow kids to not only learn skills but also learn how to create and follow-through on a project for a client.

Bill and Shane are excited to bring Creative Storytelling and Movie Making to Saturday Academy not only to share their passion for the storytelling thought process and film but also to teach kids to create, collaborate and discover tools to aid in expressing themselves.

Join Bill and Shane in their class in our Winter/Spring term to explore how to create a story, recognize the power of imagery, and create collaboratively through discussion to introduce positive feedback and artistic development. Make a story using imagery and craft a video using a non-linear editing program. Learn tricks of the trade from these wonderful industry professionals!
