Become a naturalist by exploring your own backyard or local community. Learn how to identify species and measure the biodiversity of your urban ecosystem. Grow your expertise in your favorite local plant or animal, and collect data to discover how common or rare it is in your area. As a student in this class you will learn methods in biodiversity science. You will photograph and identify local plants, fungi, and animals using the app Seek by iNaturalist and compare what you find with your classmates. Students will also get to meet scientists in video sessions who use these same methods in their biodiversity research.
Students will need access to a computer, internet and a smartphone. They will meet electronically using an online platform called Moodle as well as Zoom.
