Operate a high-powered scanning electron microscope (SEM) as you explore details too small to be revealed by a conventional microscope. Learn to collect and prepare your own samples (e.g., strawberry, pollen, your pet's fur), record and manipulate digital images, and use your images for new understanding of structure and function. Create your exploration story to share with others. On the last day of class we will tour a state-of-the-art electron microscopy laboratory and meet the scientists who work there. You will be welcomed as colleagues and have an opportunity to share your reports on your own microscopic explorations with them. You will be guided by instructors, Mike McKeag and Barbara Miner, who have combined experience of > 60 years as professional electron microscopists (but everytime we teach this class, we see something new to us).
