Saturday Academy curates transformative hands-on learning experiences in Portland, Oregon designed to support the development of your children's identity, awareness, and knowledge. We believe that this work is best explored through the intersections of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics! Dive into this semester's offerings and register today!

Winter Classes

Explore our Winter Classes for grades K-8, where curiosity meets hands-on learning in the STEAM world! This semester, we are excited to offer classes that cover a wide range of topics for grades K-8, including animal biology and habitats, engineering, animation techniques and fundamentals, urban engineering, physics, and photography. Explorers take on engineering projects where modeling, collaborative problem-solving, building, and translating thought to idea are just the beginning of the empowering challenges students tackle! Tap into the artist within to conquer the design process and embody engineering professions more fully.

Explorers Grades K-2 Classes

Animal Science | January 25 - March 15, 2025 | Saturdays 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Engage the inner scientist and animal lover! Get inquisitive about animal adaptation! Explore the biology and physiology of the Animal Kingdom's most notorious, and even mysterious creatures. Students tap into the careers connected to animal science for this fun-filled expedition!

Makers Grades 3-5 Classes

Urban Engineering | January 25 - March 15, 2025 | Saturdays 2:30pm - 3:45pm

Create solutions with action! This approachable take on urban planning invites students to imagine their own city in 3D. Build a playground model, design a monument, bridge, or sign; conceptualize a community garden! Or look at what solutions might be needed in your own neighborhood to find inspiration for a project. Makers wrap their minds around structural integrity, size and scale, energy consumption, and transportation efficiency in this relevant deep dive on sustainability.

Makers Grades 3-5 Classes

Animation Fundamentals | January 25 - March 15, 2025 | Saturdays 1:00pm - 2:15pm

Students delve into the basics of animation and its relevant terminology, as well as focus on the processes of researching, script writing, and storyboarding. From sketching and illustrating flipbooks, to analyzing animated film, Makers engage in a vast array of skills required in the animation field. This class is offered as the first installment of an optional 2-part series that builds on itself.

Physics Investigations | January 25 - March 15, 2025 | Saturdays 1:00pm - 2:30pm

Creators deepen their understanding of physics and its relationship to other science studies, which together create possibilities in the realms of quantum computing, data analytics, nanotechnology, and more. Dive into the world of physics and discover the countless careers and fields you could pursue!

Creators Grades 6-8 Classes

Photojournalism | January 25 - March 15, 2025 | Saturdays 2:45pm - 4:15pm | **HYBRID

Step behind the lens to capture the captivating, thought-provoking, and challenging. This hybrid class explores the tools and techniques of photography, while inviting students to establish a perspective and craft a narrative and experience for viewers through photos. Engage in hands-on, in-person photography exploration, while tackling the writing portion of this class remotely. ** Hybrid dates announced two weeks prior to class with a portion occurring virtually and a portion occurring on-site.

Discover our Fall Classes for grades K-8, where hands-on STEAM learning sparks creativity and curiosity! This Fall semester, we are excited to offer classes that cover a wide range of topics, including diverse visual art techniques, studying prehistoric environments, visual storytelling including film and creative writing, hands-on science experiments, fantasy-driven challenges through D&D, and animation techniques.

Creativity soars when visual art takes center stage. This multidisciplinary class will introduce students to dynamic art projects that combine various mediums. Explore a wide range of techniques to bring imagination to life. Combine visual art with STEM to create real-world connections and tackle artistic challenges.

Prehistoric Journeys | October 19 - December 14, 2024 | Saturdays 2:15pm - 3:15pm

In this class, travel back in time to explore the lives and habitats of dinosaurs and long-extinct environments. Dig like a paleontologist excavating fossils, or investigate like a geologist studying layers of rock. Get ready to roar in this Mesozoic deep dive through a variety of occupations!

Want to learn more about the process of information sharing and how we communicate stories? Media Makers will dive into various forms of storytelling, from film to creative writing, audio production to broadcast media. Discover what resonates with you and how we can responsibly consume and share ideas in this ever-evolving industry.

Experimentation Discoveries | October 19 - December 14, 2024 | Saturdays from 2:30pm - 3:45pm

Makers plunge headfirst into experimentation, where their inner scientist tests hypotheses and deepens their understanding of how things interact and why. From growing gummy bears to viscosity experiments, to writing with invisible ink, this class is filled with hands-on opportunities for students to challenge themselves and their perceptions!

Dungeons & Dragons Investigations | October 19 - December 14, 2024 | Saturdays 1:00pm - 2:30pm

Creators devise stories and build worlds in this class dedicated to all things Dungeons & Dragons. With a focus on teamwork and exercising the imagination, this class offers an immersion into fantasy worlds full of epic pursuits and adventures. Students will enjoy gameplay while also tackling STEAM-driven challenges, utilizing the critical thinking and creativity that D&D demands.

Animators Grades 6-8 Classes

Animation: The Fundamentals | October 19 - December 14, 2024 | Saturdays 2:45pm - 4:15pm
