Saturday Academy recently completed a year-long training on equity and inclusion. Because inspiring curiosity in all children means understanding them--where they are coming from and their specific needs. More information about our equity work can be found here: Saturday Academy's Equity Statement. Here we ask you, as an instructor, to engage with the resources and reflect on how you can help all students follow their curiosity and positively impact learning in your class. Please click through the flags to complete the training.
To understand why our commitment to and work on equity is important, we turn to this picture painted by Rukaiyah Adams about the history of wealth inequality in America. Rukaiyah Adams is the Chief Investment Officer at Meyer Memorial Trust. Please click here to watch Homegirls’ guide to being powerful | Rukaiyah Adams | TEDxMtHood (14 minutes). You will be asked to reflect on it at the bottom of this web page.
Most people would agree that education plays a large role in equity. What does equity in education look like? How is it different from equality? This requires understanding the unique challenges and barriers faced by students and providing supports as needed. This approach may not ensure equal outcomes, but it strives to ensure equal opportunity.
Dorinda Carter Andrews, Department Chair of Teacher Education at Michigan State—and former industrial engineer and teacher—explores these issues in her Ted Talk, The consciousness gap in education - an equity imperative | Dorinda Carter Andrews | TEDxLansingED (15 minutes). We ask you to take note of two or three things you learned from her talk, or share your thoughts on it in the reflection at the bottom of this page.
We ask you to review one of the articles below. Would you use this in your classroom? How might that look in your class? Let us know your thoughts in the reflection at the bottom of this page.
