The mentor's lab in the Computer Science Department at Portland State University uses machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to process and analyze large data sets. This project involves the areas of data-preprocessing, feature extraction, prediction, generation, and forecasting on image/video data modalities.
The intern will be working remotely on (Big) data analysis, data mining, and developing/implementing novel machine learning / deep learning / artificial intelligence methods for image, video and/or text data. The intern's primary activities will be image data preparation, Image data-preprocessing, writing programs with programming languages (C, C++, Python, etc.). The goal is for the intern to write a successful program and use that program to process data. For example, they might develop a novel method to analyze videos to count the number of bicycles/pedestrians that passed by the camera.
The mentor believes that the seeds of interest in science and technology are more fertile when planted early. She deeply enjoys talking to younger audiences about artificial intelligence, so that she can promote the exciting opportunities and careers in computer science and engineering. This internship is part-time, with the expectation that the intern will work 100 hrs by the end of the summer. Work with the mentor will be 100% virtual, however, applicants must live within 50 miles of the internship location to be eligible for this position due to the ASE Program in-person activities.
