2024 Full STEAM Ahead Gala Honorees

Stephanie Anne Salomone, Ph.D.

Advocate · Educator · Changemaker
8 years of Board Membership, Noyce Internship program 2013-2015

Stephanie Salomone earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from UCLA in 2005, her MA in Mathematics from Boston College in 1999, and a BA in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1997. She joined the faculty at the University of Portland in 2005 and currently serves as Professor of Mathematics, Associate Dean for Faculty in the Shiley School of Engineering, Director of the STEM Education and Outreach Center, and Faculty Athletic Representative.

During her 2020-2021 academic year sabbatical, she worked for the Portland Metro STEM Partnership, one of 13 STEM Hubs in Oregon, focusing on creating equity- and student-identity-centered professional development for K-5 math teachers. She is an Associate Director of Project NExT, a national professional development and networking program for new higher-education mathematics faculty.

She was the PI on the NSF REFLECT program, advancing the use of evidence-based practices in STEM teaching at UP and the use of peer-observation for formative assessment of teaching, and she has managed a combined $2.3 million as the PI on a subaward of the Western Regional Noyce Network grant, and as PI of the NSF Noyce Scholars and Interns Program at UP. The Noyce projects support professional development and networking for STEM teachers in high-needs schools, serving our most vulnerable youth.

She is the Vice President of the Board for Saturday Academy, a local 501c3 whose mission is to engage children in hands-on STEAM learning. There, she Chairs the Engagement Committee.

She was an IBL faculty facilitator with the NSF PRODUCT grant and is the recipient of UP’s 2009 Outstanding Teaching Award, the 2019 Oregon Academy of Sciences Outstanding Educator in STEM Higher Education Award, and UP’s 2022 Outstanding Faculty Service Award.

She is a wife and a mother of three boys who play A LOT of baseball.

Of Stephanie's tremendous contributions to the betterment of education in Oregon it has been said:

Stephanie is an advocate. She is deeply passionate about the intersections of STEAM at the heart of our mission. She models grace under pressure and is a fervent connector. It's clear she gets joy out of ensuring the right people and communities are aligned. She's a solution-oriented thought partner and given the wide range of hats she wears...she has dedicated her life to being a leading female-identifying voice in areas that have not always embraced that-- Math, Engineering, and Athletics! A Board Member for eight years, she has also stewarded and supported Saturday Academy through many challenging waves. Her community work is something we can all be proud of.-- Brianna McCoy (Executive Director of Saturday Academy)

Join us in celebrating Stephanie and the future of innovative education on Friday, May 17, 2024.

10 years as an ASE Mentor

Dr. Summer Gibbs is the Douglas Strain Endowed Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Oregon Health and Science University. She received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth in 2008 and completed Postdoctoral Training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard Medical School.

Her laboratory studies novel fluorescence imaging technologies to enable patient-specific imaging.

Of Summer's deep history of quality mentorship it has been said:

Because of my experience in the Gibbs Laboratory last summer, my passion for medical research was not only solidified but grew exponentially.I found a happy place and home in the lab and achieved more then I knew I was capable because of the opportunity to work with Dr.Gibbs. I know the work I did with the Gibbs team last summer cemented the course of my education and changed my life.
