Automated Trail Hazard Monitoring System in Forest Park

Automated Trail Hazard Monitoring System in Forest Park
Design and implement a database for tracking trail hazards.
Add Internship to Locker

The mentor's lab is part of the environmental sensing and monitoring research focus within PSU's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His group focuses on the use of machine learning and signal processing in understanding environmental phenomena.

Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, with approximately 60 miles of trails. As a result, maintaining a database of trail hazards and obstructions is key to keeping these trails usable by Portland residents. Building on work from previous years, the goal of this project is to develop an Android-based system for reporting trail hazards, uploading these hazards to the cloud, organizing them in a central database, and displaying information on a website.

The intern will gain experience coding in Flutter for app development, as well as Python and TypeScript for database management. Daily activities will involve implementing new features within the existing Android app and improving the database functionality. By the end of the internship the student will have extended the functionality of the app and/or trail hazard database. This is a part-time internship, with the expectation that the intern will work at least 200 hours over the course of the summer. This internship is 100% virtual, however, applicants must live with 50 miles of the internship location to be eligible for this position due to the ASE Program in-person activities.

The mentor loves working with students who are self-directed learners, who can teach him new things as well. To learn more about the mentor and his work, see here. To view previous work done on this project, check out the GitHub page here.
