Saturday Academy at a Glance

Our History, Mission, and Programs

About Saturday Academy

Saturday Academy provides wide access to hands-on learning for diverse students in grades 2-12 in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and the Arts (STEAM). Since 1983, our community experts have sparked curiosity and love of learning in young people.

Our History

In 1983, two public school teachers, Jackie Jackson and Gail Whitney, noticed children in their classrooms who had individual interests or “sparks” that couldn’t be fully addressed in the normal school day. They felt that giving students access to an expert in the field of their interest would inspire them while also showing them the careers that follow education. This was, and still is a special need for children interested in science and technology, which moves faster than most schools can address. Jackie and Gail felt that this out-of-school supplementary education would also prevent students from dropping out or losing interest in school.

Mission Statement

Saturday Academy develops creative, confident, and curious critical thinkers by engaging students in socially conscious and equitable Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math experiences. We spark curiosity, connect our community, and empower students to become the innovative thinkers and problem solvers of the next generation.

Our Programs

Summer Youth Programs (2nd-12th grade)

Engaging science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) learning taught by community specialists online and in person in groups of 15 or fewer students.

Saturday Academy to You (SA2U) Program (2nd-8th grade)

Our classes are brought to public schools and organizations for afterschool engagement online and in person, bringing classes directly to students.

Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) Program (9th-11th grade)

High-school students go deeper on specific STEM subjects through 8-week, full time, summer internships throughout Oregon and SW Washington.

Girls Engage Technology (GET) Program (4th & 5th grade with teen trainers)

Addressing the underrepresentation of women in technology, GET workshops provide a fun, girls-only environment to spark girls’ interest and self-confidence in technology.
