Saturday Academy Launches Winter-Spring 2019 Classes!

Now open for registration, our Winter-Spring classes are packed with new learning opportunities. From web development, to medical science classes, there is something for everyone!
Nov 14, 2018

Saturday Academy is excited to launch its Winter-Spring 2019 term, now open for registration. Saturday Academy recognizes the importance of bringing together local STEM professionals with students in hands-on classes where students can follow their curiosity.  We believe that educating our young community about STEM is critical for their careers. “Sometimes students just need role models who inspire them to pursue STEM-related careers.” Says Rodney C. Adkins, senior vice president of IBM’s Systems & Technology Group in Forbes article, America Desperately Needs More STEM Students. Here's How to Get Them.

For students interested in learning about coding, we are thrilled to have Web Development Camp for grades 6-9 starting in March 2019. This course is taught by Cameron Button, local web and game developer. Students will learn about designing/coding websites and building simple web-based games using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Button will also be teaching an Intro to Web Development class, as well as Game Making with Javascript. We are also excited to offer a new class in data science for middle school students, Coding in R: Information Visualized, taught by Sunita Kenner. A Senior Analytics Manager at Extensis Inc., Kenner is also an educator who loves storytelling through data. Our full lineup of computer science and technology classes includes everything from Python to Java.

In the medical field, we are offering a new Pharmacy Up Close class for middle school students. This class is taught by Sigrid Roberts, PhD, an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Pacific University School of Pharmacy.  High school students interested in medicine will be interested in our Biomedical Technologies for Cancer and Reproduction class, taught by Mary Zelinski, PhD, is an Associate Scientist in the Division of Reproductive Sciences at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). We are offering a full complement of medical science classes taught by local medical professionals and researchers, including Emergency Medicine and General Surgery Up Close, mostly on-site at OHSU.

Finally, we will be offering our new college prep class, Your College Coach for high school juniors. In this class, students will examine the earning potential of a college degree compared to a high school diploma! They will also explore how their interests connect to majors, careers and jobs. The instructor for this class is Tina-Marie Baskin, JD. Baskin, a college essay specialist for Wilson, an AVID tutor, and business owner of Find Your Future. She will be guiding students through virtual campus visits, taking a mini ACT vs. SAT test, and addressing financial aid hurdles, college application essays and more.
