This opportunity will be a collaboration between NW Documentary and OHSU's Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). The intern will conduct interviews of scientists and staff at ONPRC and produce a short series of podcast episodes about biomedical research and the people who make it happen.
The intern will collaborate with the mentors on:
- project management
- defining the target audience and their interests
- composing a show description and mission statement
- selecting guests and conducting pre-interview research
- preparing show outlines
- interviewing guests
- recording and editing techniques
- publishing and distribution
- ethical considerations
The intern will have significant independent time to develop their vision and will be provided with professional tools to practice and execute the podcast. At the end of the internship, the chosen intern will have completed a limited series of 1 to 4 episodes of a podcast based on the research and interviews they conducted. The guidance and curriculum provided by the mentor will train the intern in technical skills, scripting, interview tactics, and the planning and conceptualization of podcast creation.
NW Documentary emphasizes learning by doing and project-based learning. Interns will be given room to practice and make mistakes in the process of creating and publishing content. This is a part-time in-person internship, with the expectation that the intern will work at least 200 hours over the course of the summer.
Students must be the minimum age specified by June 15. These age requirements are strictly enforced by the mentoring organization, and there are no exceptions. Applicants should be aware that on-site parking may be limited and/or unavailable throughout the summer; interns may be required to rely on public transit or alternative transportation.
We strongly encourage students to apply who are from one or more systemically and historically excluded group, including but not limited to, non-cis-gendered students, girls, BIPOC, first-generation college-bound students, low-income/low-resourced students, students with disabilities, students who are neurodivergent, and those who speak a primary language other than English.
If you have any questions about the application, website technical issues and/or this position description, please contact Saturday Academy at ase@saturdayacademy.org. Do not contact the mentor directly. Contacting the mentor directly is grounds for disqualification of your ASE application
Interns should be self-motivated and excited to take on the role of science podcaster. Please note, the intern will be required to complete a security/background check. Medical clearance may be required, and may take 3-5 days to process. If required, you will need to provide your personal health records. Students must be minimum age specified by June 15.
