    Spirit Mountain supports STEAM Academy

Thanks to the Spirit Mountain Community Fund, Saturday Academy is excited to offer an academic summer camp to low-income students in the Portland community. STEAM Academy is a high-impact, full-day camp held at the University of Portland (UP) campus in North Portland for 4th-9th grade students. Students work with academic tutors and attend hands-on classes in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM) taught by local professionals.

    ASE Alumni Spotlight: Nakul Sridhar

Saturday Academy’s Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (ASE) program has quite the reputation in Corvallis. For over 20 years the ASE program has partnered with Oregon State University professors and researchers to provide Corvallis high school students the opportunity to have real-world, hands-on internships in the STEM fields. When he was a junior, Nakul Sridhar, decided to apply to this program he had heard so much about throughout his years at Crescent Valley High School.

Why Do Hospitals Stay Open & Schools Close?

My husband was scheduled for a life-important spinal cord operation the morning the ice storm hit Portland last week. Our street is nearly impassible on a good day, let alone in an ice storm so we anticipated and scheduled a friend to take us across town at 4:30am in his “tank.”  We worried the hospital would cancel the operation due to the inability to get physicians, nurses and staff there in this weather. They did not.  It went as planned.

    ASE Alumni Spotlight: Dylan McDowell

In the summer of 2007, Dylan McDowell dissected a six foot blue shark in front of a live audience; he was just 15 years old. Equipped with a microphone headset and dissection tools, Dylan set out to impart some of his newfound marine life knowledge on to the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s guests. He was anxious about making a wrong move or not being able to answer an audience member’s question. “I was really put to the test. The stakes were high!” Dylan recalls.

    The Meaningful Support of Mentors

Saturday Academy offers a diverse and eclectic selection of internships to students that are chosen to participate in our Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (ASE) program. Recently, following the launch of our new website, we decided to spend some time reaching out to ASE alumni to find out what they most valued about their internship experience. What we found is that all of our alumni had strong and meaningful connections with those that mentored them.
