ASE Selection Process

Important information for ASE applicants.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT contact the mentors unless they’ve initiated contact with you.

You should contact ASE with questions about the selection process or to discuss reasons behind your application’s status.  Contacting the mentors about this information may disqualify your current application and future applications to the ASE program.  Contact ASE staff here.

Selection Process Schedule

  • Application Review Process: March 6-16
  • Application Delivery to Mentors: March 17
  • Ranking Submittal: April 7
  • Position Offers: April 10-May 12
  • On-Boarding Process and Forms: End of May
  • Orientations
Select from the following:

ASE staff will first approve applications based on completeness. Then they will review approved applications for student eligibility for ASE and position prerequisites stated on the position descriptions. ASE staff will also be contacting students with confirmations or question on their applications. Staff will also be notifying students if we place their application into additional positions.

Students should check email and phone messages frequently during this time as ASE staff will be contacting them with application eligibility, opportunities for additional application placements, and questions on their applications. In most cases if ASE staff has questions about an application, the student will only have one day to reply with the information before their application will be taken out of consideration.

Please consider adding ASE@saturdayacademy.org & info@saturdayacademy.org to your email's contacts and safe senders so you are sure not to miss an email from ASE staff.

Mentors will review the applications and possibly conduct interviews.  Many of the mentors conduct interviews for at least their top 3 applicants.  However, students should not be discouraged if they are not called for interview as not all mentors conduct interviews. NOTE: Due to the current situation surrounding COVID-19, any interviews conducted may be over the phone or video.

Students should prepare for interviews by reading the Interview Skills Guide and practicing with a friend or family member.  Students should regularly check their email and phone messages as mentors may  contact  applicants  during this time to schedule interviews or ask follow up questions on applications.

Mentors rank their top candidates for their positions and send to ASE for further placement. Mentors MAY NOT offer students internships and students should contact ASE if they believe that they’ve been offered an internship during an interview.

If interns did not receive an interview by this time period, they should not worry - as many mentors do not conduct interviews for their ASE applicants.

ASE staff will call students and offer them an internship once all rankings are received.  In some instances, ASE staff may be able to offer a student a choice of positions, though in a vast majority cases, students are only offered a single position due to the high number of qualified candidates.

At the end of the offering phase, ASE will email notices to the students who did not receive internships.

Students should regularly check their phone messages during this time as ASE staff will be calling to offer students positions. Failure to reply to calls from ASE staff may result in disqualification of your application.

ASE staff will send students their internship confirmation letters that include links to forms that they must fill out for the ASE program AND, in some cases, for the mentor’s organization. Parents will also receive a form to fill out.

Students and parents must fill out ASE and mentor organization paperwork (some of which requires in-person meetings with their mentor’s organization) in a timely fashion.  Some mentor organizations may require students to complete a background check, physical exam, TB, or drug test before starting their internship. We are unable to know all of the on-boarding procedures of every mentoring organization. Please feel free to ask about this during any interview that you may have during the selection process. Students who fail to submit their paperwork on time may not be able to participate in their internship or the ASE program.

Students selected as ASE interns and new mentors will be required to attend an evening orientation in late May.

Most students will start their internships the week of June 20th depending on when school ends and what is convenient for the mentor’s schedule.
