Hours: 60-80 hrs distributed between 6/1/26 - 8/31/26

Saturday Academy seeks a broad spectrum of employees reflecting our community and those we serve. Saturday Academy is strongly committed to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment. Qualified individuals from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. This position is available to all without regard to race, color, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender, political affiliation, or religion. We provide reasonable accommodation for qualified individuals. Saturday Academy is an equal-opportunity employer.

BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1983, Saturday Academy (SA) is a nonprofit educational organization that provides thousands of youth with hands-on learning; guided by experts in a way that enriches young lives and develops a life-long curiosity and passion for learning. Saturday Academy offers classes, summer camps, and afterschool programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan area (grades K-12), as well as a state-wide high school internship program placing students in some of Oregon’s most well-known businesses. We inspire children to pursue their curiosity, with programming centered in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Saturday Academy strives to make our programs accessible to all and as an organization values Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Quality Programming/Student Experience, A Growth Mindset, Our Staff, and STEAM.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Saturday Academy’s Apprenticeships in STEAM Exploration (ASE) Program connects motivated high school students with mentors for pre-professional summer internships. ASE is seeking early-career STEAM professionals to take on the role of ASE Advisors, who help support ASE students as they navigate their summer learning experiences. Students are matched with full-time ASE Mentors who are responsible for the day-to-day Apprenticeship work, while ASE Advisors provide support and advocacy for a cohort of 5-10 interns. The ASE Advisors have two primary objectives: provide support to students as they embark on the social-emotional journey of being in the workplace for the first time, and intentionally build community among interns from different internships, forming long-lasting relationships within the ASE Community.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Attend and assist with ASE Program events: Orientation (6/1 6:30-8 pm), Symposium (5 hour event, date TBD 8/13-15), and either Welcome Picnic (6/27) or Midsummer Conference (7/16).
  • Coordinate and conduct on-site observations and interviews with a cohort of interns and mentors twice during the summer – an initial interview and a final interview.
  • Maintain weekly communication with the cohort to foster community and remind them of upcoming ASE Program events and deadlines.
  • Be available to your cohort of interns as a source of information, advice, and support.
  • Maintain strong communication with ASE staff, conferring with them regarding potential problems or issues in the internships.
  • Organize at least one gathering of your cohort of interns during the summer to promote connection between interns.

DESIRED SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Passion for working with and guiding youth at critical life stages.
  • Lived experience in a STEAM career path.
  • Located in the Portland area for the summer.
  • Preferred: graduated from high school relatively recently, e.g. between 2014-2024

TIME & PAY
This role will have flexible, variable hours throughout the summer. Most work will take place during normal work hours (M-F, 9-5), with the exception of limited weekend and evening time at designated events, as assigned. Besides the already scheduled ASE events, you will have complete control over your schedule. The main time commitment will be conducting internship site visits in late June and early August. The total hours for the summer will range from 60-80, depending on the number of interns in your cohort and events that you attend. Pay will be calculated based on expected hours at the rate of $25/hr.

TO APPLY:
Email your cover letter, resume, and contact information for two references to careerexploration@saturdayacademy.org by Wednesday, May 13th for best consideration. Applications will be reviewed and interviews scheduled on a rolling basis.
