    Board Member Spotlight: David Squire

Dave Squire serves as Saturday Academy’s Board Chair, which means that he gets a very wide view of everything that the organization does. We asked him a few questions about his role at Saturday Academy and within the Portland community.

How/when did you first hear about Saturday Academy?

DAVID SQUIRE: Probably when I first got involved with education reform around 1990. I knew some of the Saturday Academy’s board members at the time and later met the Executive Director, Joyce Cresswell.

    SA from a 7th grader's POV

Hello, my name is Peter Van Vleet. I am in seventh grade and I love sloths. I have taken Saturday Academy classes before but never have been in the office. So I volunteered for two weeks and I think I did projects for each department.

    PIVOT Jobcorps Volunteers with us

“Would you like to scoop out some crawfish?” Probably not what you would expect to hear during a volunteer activity, but then again, here at Saturday Academy we pride ourselves on being hands-on and in-depth! This spring we partnered with PIVOT JobCorps to host a Spring Garage Clean Out Day where we managed science supplies, organized class kits and yes, even scooped biological materials out of tubs. We have buckets of specimen for an array of classes and camps we offer.

First Tech Credit Union Volunteers at Saturday Academy

As the Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator for Saturday Academy, I am tasked with cultivating partnerships and creating community relationships. When I started my position seven months ago, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what those partnerships would look like and how they would function. But that’s the beauty Saturday Academy and our community engagement-not one partnership looks like the other. Each relationship built with another organization has its own unique give and take.

    Instructor Spotlight: Carolyne Haycraft

One of my favorite aspects of my job at Saturday Academy is that I get to meet with our amazing instructors to find out more about their passions and hear their stories. Saturday Academy’s focus on bringing community experts in as instructors to share their expertise with curious students in a hands-on, exploratory environment means that kids have the opportunity to experience a variety of disciplines with adults that are enthusiastic about what they do. Carolyne Haycraft is one such instructor.
