Math is more than numbers! Rubik's Snakes, Mathlink Cubes and Geometric Construction kits are used as hands-on ways of visualizing math in our upcoming Math Connections class.
Instructors Cristina Draghicescu, PhD in Mathematics, and Mircea Draghicescu, PhD Computer Science, are co-founders of Everything Math. Their passion for the beauty, utility and creativity in math is contagious! Cristina has taught K-12 and college mathematics for over 20 years. She is the Senior Content Advisor for the National Museum of Mathematics in New York where she is part of the team who develops and teaches the museum enrichment program for mathematically gifted students in grades K-8. Cristina also worked as a software engineer in the Portland area high tech industry and co-founded ITSPHUN, a company that designs and develops construction toys for creative play and math education. Cristina and Mircea both speak Romanian, and Mircea speaks some Russian.
Teaching philosophy: "Mathematics is all around us in the real world and in society. Although mathematics is more widely used and more popular than ever before, it is unfortunately perceived as hard, tedious, not fun. We all need math to help us make sense of the world, to learn and practice logical thinking. We want to help students perceive math as a world of patterns and relationships to be discovered, puzzles and questions to be explored and solved. We believe that all students are capable of viewing math as fun, beautiful and creative. Our approach is simple: solve interesting problems from various areas of mathematics. New mathematical facts (theorems, formulas, algorithms, etc.) are always proven, not memorized. We provide plenty of challenges to keep the students interested and develop their skills; sometimes this takes us far beyond the school curriculum." - Cristina & Mircea
“My son Henry thoroughly enjoyed it (Math Connections), even in the online format. It was the most engaged that I have seen him in math, probably ever.” - SA Parent
