My name is Maddox Zhang and I’m the Saturday Academy (SA) winter “extern.” I’m spending two weeks learning about the inner workings of SA and supporting staff members on projects. Originally from Connecticut, I’m a sophomore biochemistry major at Reed College with a deep ardor for social justice. In my free time, I love watching nature documentaries and getting out to explore Portland’s lively and ever-changing food, art and fashion scenes.
Note from ASE staff: The blog below was written by Vittoria Tanisha, a student in Dr. Marilyn Mackiewicz's Capstone class - Empowering and Advancing Students in STEM. Dr. Mackiewicz is a Research Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Portland State University and is entering her third year as an ASE mentor.
Stephanie Fitzgerald always wanted to be a scientist—both of her parents were scientists and she grew up fascinated by the subject. This dream has become a reality for Stephanie, and her journey included an Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (ASE) internship in 1998.
Thank you for all of your hard and inspiring work at Saturday Academy. As a fellow instructor, I know the challenges of teaching and the joys of impacting youth by sharing my talents, skills and expertise. My name is Joe Fraioli and I am an Encore Fellow finishing out my career in electrical engineering by writing curriculum and instructing for Saturday Academy. Let me tell you, our efforts do not go unnoticed.
