Salary: $27 per hour/$621-$1,090 weekly

BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1983, Saturday Academy (SA) is a nonprofit educational organization that provides thousands of youth with hands-on learning; guided by experts in a way that enriches young lives and develops a life-long curiosity and passion for learning. Saturday Academy offers classes, summer camps, and afterschool programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan area (grades k-12), as well as a state-wide high school internship program placing students in some of Oregon’s most well-known businesses. We inspire children to pursue their curiosity but concentrate our programming on topics in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. POSITION OVERVIEW:
Saturday Academy is looking for individuals who have childhood educational engagement experience, a passion for guiding STEAM-themed activities, and a commitment to reducing barriers to access in STEAM-education opportunities for youth. Saturday Academy offers full-day, full-week summer programs from 9am-4pm. Educators are responsible for the leadership, curriculum implementation, and classroom management of our 3rd-5th (Makers) and 6th-8th (Creators) grade programs that do not exceed a staff structure of 1 to 6.
Camps will be collaboratively taught by two educators and a support specialist, with guidance and structure provided by SA staff. As a Saturday Academy Summer Camp Educator, you will prepare class materials and lesson plans with the support of SA staff. Educators are in charge of supporting student-centered hands-on activities that engage campers in specific and focused understanding as they explore the interactions of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics.
We are specifically looking for educators with a background in THEATRE/DRAMA and ANIMATION (with a focus on the technical side/coding and youth friendly animation programs) and/or SCIENCE and ENGINEERING explorations (bonus, if there is an emphasis on LEGO ROBOTICS).

*please note, this particular week is an AFFINITY CAMP. Saturday Academy is offering this camp as a safe and empowering space specifically for students identifying as female, afab, or nonbinary to explore the world of engineering! Our educators should reflect those same identities. Please apply for that week if you are a part of those communities specifically.
Close coordination and communication with Saturday Academy staff is essential to ensure your class technology and supply needs are met.
Currently, SA is hiring educators from all disciplinary backgrounds, but is specifically seeking those with the following specialties/qualifications:
- Lego Robotics, Engineering with a youth focus, game-theory, character and world building, virtual reality, coding, theatre and drama, and/or science (all types of science disciplines welcome!)
We celebrate arts-integrated approaches to learning, drawing strong connections for each individual to tune into the world around them and how it works. We focus on cultivating key life skills in students, such as collaboration, empathy, and focused creativity.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Preparing necessary resources for the program.
- Writing designated lesson plans, with SA Youth Program staff and support.
- Facilitating age appropriate, hands-on activities for campers that align with the weekly theme
- Possess the ability to navigate and adjust provided Saturday Academy curriculum to fit the unique needs of the group from week to week with tact and sensitivity
- Demonstrate flexibility in guiding activities, projects, and/or exercises to meet the current class dynamic
- Ability to adapt programming as needed
- Support classroom management strategies that balance serving individual needs with the larger group dynamic.
- Completing all administrative teaching responsibilities as assigned.
- Communicating with Site Leads regarding any program needs, concerns, etc.
- Providing for the well-being and safety of campers by meeting physical and emotional needs in compliance with the state and organization’s policies
DESIRED SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE:
- Passionate commitment to the transformative power of hands-on learning.
- Commitment to youth social-emotional development.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- At least one year of experience working with youth ages 7-14.
- Positively supports inclusion in all forms: ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religious/spiritual affiliations, disabilities, political perspectives, etc.
- Strives for excellence, is self-motivated and able to problem solve
- Possesses strong written and oral communication skills
- Thinks strategically, acts resourcefully, and makes decisions with conviction
- Exhibits a strong work ethic and personal integrity, and can remain enthusiastic and successful in a fast-paced work environment
- Shows strong interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, and the ability to network and build lasting relationships
- Works well independently and as part of a cohesive team
- Fully vaccinated
- Transportation to and from University of Portland, and/or off-site locations in the community.
