    ASE Alumni Spotlight: Dylan McDowell

In the summer of 2007, Dylan McDowell dissected a six foot blue shark in front of a live audience; he was just 15 years old. Equipped with a microphone headset and dissection tools, Dylan set out to impart some of his newfound marine life knowledge on to the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s guests. He was anxious about making a wrong move or not being able to answer an audience member’s question. “I was really put to the test. The stakes were high!” Dylan recalls.

    The Meaningful Support of Mentors

Saturday Academy offers a diverse and eclectic selection of internships to students that are chosen to participate in our Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (ASE) program. Recently, following the launch of our new website, we decided to spend some time reaching out to ASE alumni to find out what they most valued about their internship experience. What we found is that all of our alumni had strong and meaningful connections with those that mentored them.

    Why was My Class Cancelled?

Saturday Academy takes every precaution to ensure that all of our classes and camps run as scheduled. As a non-profit organization dedicated to hands-on learning, we want every child to have the opportunity to explore their curiosity. Our Classes & Camps department works closely with our expert instructors to design engaging, in-depth classes and camps for our students. Our donors provide extensive funding towards financial aid and tuition assistance for low-income students each year to help increase enrollment.

    ASE Alumni Spotlight: Akshay Pulavarty

In December of 2016, I had the privilege of sitting down with University of Virginia freshman, Akshay Pulavarty. In between medical shadowing, hanging out with his family and relaxing during his winter break, Akshay made time to chat with me about his whereabouts during the summer of 2014. For eight weeks, Akshay worked full-time at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) researching multiple sclerosis as an Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (ASE) intern.
