On Charlottesville

This week many have said of our leaders “Say something!” We are leaders in education and this is what we have to say:

“We stand in solidarity with our communities of color and all vulnerable and marginalized communities. We will not let white supremacy flourish. We denounce the actions of this hateful group. We continue as allies – even more so now when it’s needed the most. We lend safe space, solace and give our commitment to fighting against hate as an organization. We yield our privilege so that we can best aid those who have not been offered the same in this country. “

New Director of Classes & Camps

We are pleased to announce that Rachael Pecore-Valdez has accepted the position as Classes & Camps Director at Saturday Academy. For the past eight months as the Classes & Camps Coordinator, she helped to expand our program offerings through new and innovative classes while continuing to support and grow our roster of expert instructors. She is perfectly suited to step into to this role as a scientist and has deep experience in planning innovative classes for both children and adults.

Board Member Spotlight: David Squire

Dave Squire serves as Saturday Academy’s Board Chair, which means that he gets a very wide view of everything that the organization does. We asked him a few questions about his role at Saturday Academy and within the Portland community.

How/when did you first hear about Saturday Academy?

DAVID SQUIRE: Probably when I first got involved with education reform around 1990. I knew some of the Saturday Academy’s board members at the time and later met the Executive Director, Joyce Cresswell.
