Institute for Applied Ecology

Conservation Research Intern

Conservation Research Intern
Conserve native species and habitats through research.

The intern will work as a member of research teams on a variety of projects throughout the Willamette Valley, including rare plant habitat surveys, threatened and endangered species research and monitoring, and invasive species research. The intern's primary activities will be assisting with field-based studies that support the monitoring of rare plants and research studies. The majority of time will be spent in the field following research protocols to identify and survey plants. Additional time will be spent in the office managing data, preparing for fieldwork, and training.

The intern will gain an understanding of ecological research methods and field-based protocols, as well as gain experience working with a professional team of ecologists and botanists. The intern will also improve their plant identification skills. For more information about the Institute and the types of projects the intern could be involved in, visit https://appliedeco.org/research/.

The Institute for Applied Ecology has a 20-year history working with aspiring ecologists as interns. They believe interns should have direct field experience coupled with regular mentoring and check-ins to follow progress and address any questions. While interns are an important part of the team, expectations are established appropriate to their background and experience. The expectations for hours for this position are not yet finalized, but likely to be full-time.

Students must be minimum age specified by June 16. These age requirements are strictly enforced by the mentoring organization, and there are no exceptions. Please note that this internship takes place in the Corvallis area, and you must provide an address within 50 miles of the internship on your application to be considered.

We strongly encourage students to apply who are from one or more systemically and historically excluded group, including but not limited to, non-cis-gendered students, girls, BIPOC, first-generation college bound students, low-income/low-resourced students, students with disabilities, who are neurodivergent, and those who speak a primary language other than English.

This internship will take place in-person in CORVALLIS, OR with the option of occasional remote work as permitted by Federal/State/Local/IAE guidelines. To reduce the risks of coronavirus exposure, mentors and interns will act in accordance with applicable COVID guidelines and procedures. Selected applicants will be required to review and sign a waiver agreement.

If you have any questions about the application, website technical issues and/or this position description, please contact Saturday Academy at ase@saturdayacademy.org. Do not contact the mentor directly. Contacting the mentor directly is grounds for disqualification of your ASE application.
