By Lanie Van Vleet, 6th grader and Saturday Academy Volunteer
Hi. My name is Lanie Van Vleet. I am 11 years old and I am a Sellwood Middle School student in the sixth grade. Before now I had never worked in my mom Libby Van Vleet’s office and decided it would be fun to learn more about Saturday Academy and the ASE Program. So I volunteered.
Over the week I helped out the Classes Department. I have organized binders, made LED pipe cleaner rings, sorted pens & markers, condensed toilet paper tubes and cardboard like things, and on top of that, I took a Saturday Academy class about how to make apps, co-led by the wonderful Katie Gibbs, Classes & Camps Coordinator.
I have seen and learned how my mom, Libby Van Vleet, ASE Program Coordinator, works when she is not with our family, and met some of her friends. She toured me and my brother Peter around the University of Portland campus where she works.
At Saturday Academy, I saw how hard people work to make things happen. I also got a small peak at the classes coming up. I was interested in:
- Virtual Reality Worlds
- Screenwriting
- Creative Writing
- Stage Makeup
I can’t wait to take another class!
