Summer learning still looks different in 2021. Slowly, schools and businesses are transitioning back to in-person with the availability of COVID-19 vaccines. We are happy to be continuing to offer virtual learning, and are extremely excited that there will be in-person offerings for our students as well.
SA2U is also gearing up for the summer with classes. Community-based organizations and parents may also request classes for small groups of students grades 2-12 through SA2U.
Camps to look forward to this summer!
Take a sneak peek at what the classes and camp department is planning this summer-
Creative Arts Lab (Grades 2-4)
Spend a week immersed in the creative arts! Draw, paint, write and act. Find your muse! Work with professionals in the field to help guide you through a week-long artistic journey. Will you write and illustrate a story, or create a play? Who knows where your creativity will lead you!
Build and test bridges, towers, cranes, and cars with LEGO®. Design a Rube Goldberg device. Learn how evolution shapes the digestive tracts of animals as your team dissects a shark. Study the chemistry of bioluminescence in squid and deep-sea fish. Make magnetic flowing polymers and explore the science of innovation.
Cybersecurity Training (Grades 6-8)
Develop your security awareness by recognizing phishing and sniffing and understanding password-cracking techniques. Learn to identify malicious websites and practice security concepts in the form of fun-filled games.
What are the Odds: A Fun Look at Probability (Grades 9-12)
Have ever wondered why casinos win more than their customers, why insurance companies are able to survive with all the money they payout, or how game shows can predict how much they will end up awarding their contestants? If so this is the class for you. Discover through real-world situations why what often seems like a risky transaction for some is practically a sure thing for others.
Additional Information about Summer
In-person day camps will run weekly from June 28th through August 6th at Open School East in southeast Portland. Exciting new camps include STEAM Tracks, Animal Biology Camp, Creative Arts Lab, and Digital Music Project.
For other summer camp opportunities check with your local school district. Many schools will be offering enrichment programming this summer, and we are in conversation with a few different school districts to bring Saturday Academy camps and classes to schools.
Safety remains our priority and our in-person activities will follow Oregon Health Authority's guidelines for youth programs. This includes a requirement of students to wear masks, stay in their camp cohort for the day and respect physical distance guidelines. Activities will run in both indoor classrooms and outdoor areas. There will be no field trips by bus in 2021. View our COVID-19 updates page here.
