Are you a high school student thinking of a career in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM)? Are you curious what skills or education you need, or what it’s like in a day to day setting? Employment in STEM fields, especially healthcare, tech, cybersecurity, and engineering continue to be on the rise. For the last 37 years, Saturday Academy has been there to foster students’ interest in exploring these pathways for their future.
With Saturday Academy fall classes going online, so have our popular “experience” classes. This fall SA is offering a series of STEM Career workshops for students in grades 9-12 in the areas of: medicine, architecture, software development, aviation and aerospace, information security, engineering, and IT. These workshops range from 1.5 to 2 hours and are facilitated by local professionals who are excited to connect and share their careers and career pathways with high school students. In fact, Meredith Datena, our Girls in Aviation and Aerospace instructor, was once a SA student and ASE intern. She is now returning as an instructor and teaching the very class that inspired her to become a private pilot, while continuing to work for OHSU, where she was an ASE intern.
Saturday Academy could not offer these workshops without the help of community partners. We are proud to continue partnerships with the Ninety-Nines, an international non-profit representing over 6000 women aviators worldwide, as well as Opsis Architecture a local architecture and interior design practice. New STEM Career partners this fall are New Relic, a global software development company, the Port of Portland and PDX, and the Association of Women Surgeons at OHSU.
Online workshops will include a brief intro about the local company or organization, a hands on activity or engaging presentation, and participation in a career panel where student can hear how these professionals came into their field, and ask questions about a typical day at work, what tech skills and education are needed, work trends, equity and diversity in the workplace, and how the current pandemic has changed or challenged the working atmosphere.
